Advances in atmospheric acoustics

Abstract: We give a detailed review of developments in atmospheric acoustics of the last decade. These developments include new ways to use refractive effects, studies of phase and amplitude fluctuations during propagation of sound along a path, nonlinear effects near high‐powered acoustic antennas, problems related to noise, insights into large‐scale atmospheric processes gained from infrasound, applications dependent on the Doppler frequency shift, and hybrid devices using both acoustic and electromagnetic waves. The … Show more

“…Brown and Hall 1978), and the possibility of reliable quantitative measurements of C 2 T by using a sodar was shown in many studies (e.g. Coulter and Wesely 1980;Weill et al 1980;Gur'yanov et al 1987;Asimakopoulos et al 1983;Danilov et al 1994).…”

“…Acoustic remote sensing, based on the scattering of acoustic waves by small-scale turbulent temperature and wind fluctuations, provides a clear pattern of the structure of the ABL (Brown and Hall 1978). Sodar allows continuous monitoring of vertical profiles of the temperature structure parameter C 2 T , since the intensity of the backscattered acoustic signal is proportional to C 2 T (Kallistratova 1962;Tatarskii 1971).…”
