Advances in asthma in 2017: Mechanisms, biologics, and genetics

Abstract: This review summarizes some of the most significant advances in asthma research over the past year. We first focus on novel discoveries in the mechanism of asthma development and exacerbation. This is followed by a discussion of potential new biomarkers, including the use of radiographic markers of disease. Several new biologics have become available to the clinician in the past year, and we summarize these advances and how they can influence the clinical delivery of asthma care. After this, important findings… Show more

“…e cell types involved in the pathological process of asthma include 2 cells, 17 cells, NK cells, antigen presenting cells, B cells, etc. [9][10][11][12][13]. As an important natural immune cell, NK cells are the third type of lymphocytes along with T cells and B cells.…”

“…Periostin, an extracellular matrix protein secreted by airway epithelial cells in response to IL-13 that regulates epithelial-mesenchymal interactions (Fitzpatrick 2015), has been associated with T2-high eosinophilic asthma (Grayson et al 2018). Periostin expression is increased in the asthmatic airway (Lopez-Guisa et al 2012).…”

“…Although all advantages of serum biomarkers, it is important to remember that peripheral blood studies often do not reflect airway biology, and therefore peripheral blood biomarkers might not represent physiologic mechanisms in the airways (Grayson et al 2018).…”

“…In Table 1, we list the currently proposed candidate biomarkers as well as their potential sampling compartment, advantages, disadvantages and utility for clinical use. [53]. Mouse models suggest a role of periostin in subepithelial fibrosis, eosinophil recruitment, and mucus production from goblet cells [54].…”
