The antagonistic side effects of chemical medications led to the search for safe strategies such as biogenic agents. Correspondingly, this study aims to create biogenic, appropriate, auspicious and innovative therapeutic agents like Galaxaura elongata {GE}, Turbinaria ornata {TO} and Enteromorpha flexuosa {EF} macroalgae-based silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). The Ag+ reduction and the creation of Ag[GE]-NPs, Ag[TO]-NPs and Ag[EF]-NPs have been validated using UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and zeta potential analysis, and the chemical composition of macroalgae crude extracts was estimated through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Further, macroalgae-based Ag-NPs were tested for their free radical scavenging activity DPPH, ABTS, anticancer activity in human liver carcinoma (HepG2) cell line, distinctive inflammation forms and elevated α-amylase. Results showed that the biosynthesized Ag-NPs have unique mechanical and physicochemical characters attributed to their high relative surface area, nanosized dimensions and spherical shape. At dose of 200 µg/mL, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity was maximized with Ag[TO]-NPs (67.26%); however, Ag[EF]-NPs was the most potent as ABTs scavenger (97.74%). Additionally, Ag[GE]-NPs had the maximum proteinase inhibitory action with 59.78%. The 1000 µg/mL of Ag[GE]-NPs, Ag[TO]-NPs and Ag[EF]-NPs revealed significant inhibitions of cell growth of HepG2 resulting in cell viabilities 5.92%, 4.44% and 11.33%, respectively. These findings suggest that macroalgae bio-capped Ag-NPs have magnificent biological potentials for safe biomedical applications.

Textile industry wastewater has become a growing concern in recent years due to it has been characterized by a high load of organic dyes, suspended and dissolved solids, alkaline pH, and low biodegradability. As a result, environmental authorities necessitate textile industries to treat effluents before discharge into the environment. Tertiary filters, particularly membrane filtrations, are the most preferable process to recover good-quality water at the tertiary treatment phase, which feeds from secondary effluents, in wastewater treatment processes. However, fouling is still a challenge due to a higher load of suspended solids, colloids, organic matter, and a high level of bio-colloids (mostly from secondary effluents) in the textile wastewater treatment process. Bio-colloids are any colloidal entities of organic matter including microorganisms and their exudates. Hence, a coagulation/flocculation unit process, as a pretreatment option, is critical both at the primary treatment stage and after secondary (biological) effluents to prevent fouling problems at the tertiary filters. We reviewed identifying major foulants causing tertiary filter damage and the available pretreatment option for the removal of these foulants. We focus on and suggest the coagulation/flocculation process as a good pretreatment alternative to prevent filter fouling as it provides a reliable process to treat high water turbidity that arises from a high load of solids and colloids. Amongst different types of foulants, we focus on and present the colloidal solids and bio-colloidal foulants that could be major causes of fouling. These foulants are less understood and expected to be dominant in the textile industry wastewater, and established pretreatment alternatives are not well developed for the bio-foulants fed from the secondary effluent. Thus, these foulants need to be critically identified in the textile wastewater treatment plants to integrate suitable pretreatment options to prevent fouling potentiality. We proposed a coagulation/flocculation unit process as a pretreatment option to reduce colloidal and bio-colloidal fouling before the tertiary treatment stage, next to the secondary effluent, is critical.

Dried Brown Seaweed’s Phytoremediation Potential for Methylene Blue Dye Removal from Aquatic Environments

The dried form of the brown seaweed Sargassum latifolium was tested for its ability to remove toxic Methylene Blue Dye (MBD) ions from aqueous synthetic solutions and industrial wastewater effluents. In a batch adsorption experiment, different initial concentrations of MBD (5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg L−1), sorbent dosages (0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 g L−1), contact time (5, 10, 15, 30, 60, 120 min), pH (3, 5, 8, 10, and 12), and temperature (30, 40, 50, 60 °C) were observed. Dried powder of S. latifolium was characterized before and after adsorption of MBD using different techniques, such as FTIR, SEM, UV visible spectral examination, and BET techniques. The BET surface area suggests the formation of S. latifolium was 111.65 m2 g−1, and the average pore size was 2.19 nm. The obtained results showed that at an MBD concentration of 40 mg L−1, the adsorption was rapid in the first 5, 10, and 15 min of contact time, and an equilibrium was reached in about 60 and 120 min for the adsorption. At the optimum temperature of 30 °C and the adsorbent dose of 0.1 g L−1, approximately 94.88% of MBD were removed. To find the best-fit isotherm model, the error function equations are applied to the isotherm model findings. Both Tempkin and Freundlich isotherm models could appropriate the equilibrium data, as well as the pseudo 2nd order kinetics model due to high correlation coefficients (R2). Thermodynamic and Freundlich model parameters were assessed and showed that the mechanism of the sorption process occurs by an endothermic and physical process. According to the results of the experiments, S. latifolium is a promising environmentally friendly approach for eliminating MBD from the aqueous solution that is also cost-effective. This technology could be useful in addressing the rising demand for adsorbents employed in environmental protection processes.
