Advanced practice nursing roles: development, implementation and evaluation

Abstract: Recommendations for the future introduction of APN roles can be drawn from this paper. These include the need for a collaborative, systematic and evidence-based process designed to provide data to support the need and goals for a clearly defined APN role, support a nursing orientation to advanced practice, promote full utilization of all the role domains, create environments that support role development, and provide ongoing evaluation of these roles related to predetermined goals.

“…The nurse specialists also displayed two other key characteristics that are linked to the organisational structure within which they worked. Secondly, their place within the multidisciplinary team and the way this team functioned exemplified contemporary concepts of professionalism (Davies, 1996).…”

“…The APRN can be a leader of the interdisciplinary team in designing interventions based on best practice and advancing nursing practice through education, research, personal development and organizational leadership (Bryant-Lukosius, DiCenso, & Pinelli, 2004). Functions of the APRN, particularly the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), include clinical expert and change agent, which involve collaboration and consultation with other disciplines in the health care setting.…”
