Advanced Oxidation to Eliminate Growth Inhibition and to Degrade Plant Protection Products in a Recirculating Nutrient Solution in Rose Cultivation

Abstract: The EU Water Framework Directive demands a sound ecological and chemical basis for ground and surface waters. This has motivated the Dutch greenhouse industry to seek more sustainable water management procedures which will enable a zero-emission of nutrients and plant protection products (PPP) in the year 2027. Although closed soilless growing systems are widely applied in The Netherlands, it appears that discharge of nutrients varies between 5 and 40%. Discharge based on salinity is only a minor part, up to 1… Show more

“…Oxygenation was provided to both treatments with low EC to improve the nitrification ability of a bioreactor (Ebeling and Timmons, 2012 ). Saturation of nutrient solution with oxygen was reported to reduce growth self-inhibition of roses in re-circulating cultivation systems (van Os et al, 2012 ).…”

“…The main challenges that currently hinder the application of organic waste-based fertilizer in tomato greenhouse systems are difficulties that arise in providing the proper level and balance of nutrients, and dealing with the presence of phytotoxic organic compounds, heavy metals, and salts (Ehret et al, 2005 ; Jones, 2007 ). The effects of phytotoxic stress factors can be alleviated in part by oxygenation (van Os et al, 2012 ). However, little is known regarding the effects of organic waste-based fertilizer on the development of tomato plants and quality of tomato fruits.…”

“…Однако в зонах с ограниченными возможностями в обеспечении тепличных хозяйств качественной по химическому составу водой её следует использовать в замкнутом цикле как можно дольше. Это соответствует и требованиям Европейского законодательства (Water Framework Directive) по снижению потерь с дренажным стоком азота, фосфора и средств защиты растений [76]. Для крупных тепличных хозяйств с площадью более 2 га лучшим выбором будет нагрев питательного раствора или его ультрафиолетовое облучение [74].…”
