Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) for monitoring oxidative stress in critically ill patients: a simple, fast and inexpensive automated technique

Abstract: Oxidative stress is known to be involved in many human pathological processes. Although there are numerous methods available for the assessment of oxidative stress, most of them are still not easily applicable in a routine clinical laboratory due to the complex methodology and/or lack of automation. In research into human oxidative stress, the simplification and automation of techniques represent a key issue from a laboratory point of view at present. In 1996 a novel oxidative stress biomarker, referred to as … Show more

“…This method of measurement, however, does not support a molecular approach for determining the oxidation contribution to molecular aging of proteins (55 ). Because of the structural diversity of AOPPs, spectral characteristics correspond to several chromophores such as dityrosine, carbonyls, and pentosidine.…”

“…Proteins that are exquisitely vulnerable to ROS in vivo have been designated as advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) (4). Measurement of AOPP is especially recommended for monitoring critically ill and cancer patients (5,6). There are few markers of DNA oxidation in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.…”

“…Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) assay was used to evaluate the level of macrophage protein oxidation as previously described [42]. Following the treatments, J774A.1 macrophages (1 × 106 cells) were washed with PBS and cellular protein was extracted with PBS and protease inhibitor.…”
