Advanced Modeling of Production Induced Pressure Depletion and Well Spacing Impact on Infill Wells in Spraberry, Permian Basin

Abstract: Since early 2016, commodity prices have been gradually increasing, and the Permian Basin has become the most active basin for unconventional horizontal well development. As the plays in the basin are developed, new infill wells are drilled near pre-existing wells (known as "parent wells"). The impact of pressure depletion caused by adjacent existing producers may have a larger role in the performance of these new infill wells. How the various well spacing impact with the degree of reservoir pressure depletion … Show more

“…The values also support the upward and downward growth of fractures seen from microseismic data, the ISIP values from the HF treatment in early stages, and reported data by others [4,41,45,57,58]. Lund Snee & Zoback [59] presented a comprehensive study on the stress state in North America. They proposed a diagram for the principal stress ratio by vertical stress as a function of pore pressure and the relative stress magnitude coefficient.…”

“…Their study covered several plays across the United States, including the Bakken play. Previous to their study, there were several papers written on the same topic, including [6,45]. The results from these studies showed that on average, BPS' offset wells overperform BPS' parent wells.…”

“…To maximize the Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR) from unconventional plays, the design of hydraulic fracturing has observed tendency for larger fluid and proppant volumes and closer cluster spacing. However, these approaches led to a serious challenge known as fracture-driven interaction (FDI), also called frac bashing or frac-hit [77][78][79]. The first drilled well in unconventional is called primary or parent well, and the following drilled wells are called offset or child well.…”
