Advanced Manufacturing in Civil Engineering

Abstract: The main goal of this work is the analysis of potential energy and green benefits of 3D printing on building construction. Current literature reports a considerable number of benefits for 3D printing, namely, reduction of material use, lower operational costs and time-saving. The authors also mention design freedom, higher efficiency, productivity and quality. This work presents the latest developments in 3D printing in civil engineering, namely, a review of the last 3D printing projects and the limitations of… Show more

“…All the challenges and constraints related to cementitious mixtures are easily carried over to any conceived material/mixture intended for 3DP, not only because of its particular properties (shape, grain size, density, porosity, water absorption, elasticity, plasticity, hardness, fluidity, mechanical strength, thermal conductivity) but also due to the slow development of 3DCP technologies when it comes to creating robust, autonomous, and versatile extrusion systems that allow the replacement of components to extrude different mixtures. Consequently, all the inherent research and investigation is a trial-error process until a balance is reached [151].…”

“…The printable cementitious material can be the key issue in 3D printing construction projects [33]. It is difficult to define a constant supply of raw materials for 3D printing construction projects [34]. Apart from materials, the transportation of 3D printers is another difficult and costly issue for construction project decision-makers [22].…”

“…It is known that most 3D printing projects are limited to smaller scales [61], and remote housing is a revolutionary idea at this stage. The thermal and green benefits of using 3D printing in building construction were discussed by Guimarães et al [34,45], but Thomas [62] examined the societal costs and benefits of 3D printing from a monetary and resource consumption perspective. These studies constitute a small portion of the current 3D printing research, which proves there are ample opportunities for future studies.…”

“…With the increasing demand for sustainable development in society, the civil engineering field is also facing higher requirements and challenges [6][7]. Intelligent civil engineering based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become a key means to achieve sustainable development, and the introduction of BIM provides more accurate and comprehensive project information for civil engineering, which makes project management more efficient and reduces the waste of resources [8][9].…”
