Advanced Integrated Electric Propulsion a Reality of the Eighties

Abstract: in 1954 and served with distinction in numerous military assignments during a career that spanned 28 years of commksioned service. He received an M.S. degree in Naval Architecture from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, an M.S. degree in Financial Management from the George Washington University, and culminated his education at the Catholic University of America from which he received a Doctorate in Ocean Engineering in 1972. A n active member of ASNE since 1966, Capt. Jollgf received the PRESIDENT'S A WARD… Show more

“…Due to demanding range requirements, the most commonly studied solutions are hybrid electric marine propulsion systems, which combine mostly diesel internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors (EMs). The integrated electric propulsion concept, consisting of diesel (turbine)-EMs mechanically connected to the propeller shaft with no electric energy storage, has been used in high-level ships since 2004, when the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary 2 was launched [8]- [10]. Conversely, serial hybrid and parallel hybrid propulsion systems are provided with electric energy-storage capabilities [11]- [14].…”

“…Liquid cooling techniques have been extensively applied in the construction of central station utility generators, and could be incorporated into electric propulsion machines. [ 5 ] Potential power-dense electrical machines combine with arrangement flexibility and acoustic benefits to promote electric drive. The following is an evaluation of the effect of incorporating contrarotation into an electric drive submarine.…”
