Advanced Imaging Methods for Long-Baseline Optical Interferometry

Abstract: We address the data processing methods needed for imaging with a long baseline optical interferometer. We first describe parametric reconstruction approaches and adopt a general formulation of nonparametric image reconstruction as the solution of a constrained optimization problem. Within this framework, we present two recent reconstruction methods, MIRA and WISARD, representative of the two generic approaches for dealing with the missing phase information. MIRA is based on an implicit approach and a direct op… Show more

“…In this paper we used two of them: MIRA and WISARD. Both are presented and compared in Le Besnerais (2008) and in Lacour et al (2008). The major advantage of such methods is that they can reveal structures by reconstructing an image which fits the data and which is also close to an a priori image of the object.…”

“…The image reconstruction process is similar to the one performed for T Lep in Le Bouquin et al (2009). For the reconstruction, we used the MIRA software package (Thiébaut 2008;Cotton et al 2008;Le Besnerais et al 2008). The image was sought by minimizing a so-called cost function which is the sum of a regularization term plus data-related terms.…”

“…We then used MIRA with a strong smoothness regularization to reconstruct the first stage images. The second step uses these brightness distributions as a support for a quadratic regularization of a 2D brightness map (Le Besnerais et al 2008). Each of the spectral channels was processed separately.…”
