“…In cases where the uterus is distorted by either being deeply retroverted and retroflexed, particularly if it also included myomata, this predilects to the formation of adenomyosis in the posterior wall. 7 Sampson described these underlying uterine features in two-thirds of his cases of DIER. His better-known theory of implantation following retrograde menstruation was a later idea published in 1927 8 and which, while explaining the majority of peritoneal endometriosis, does not really explain DIER or endometriosis located in unusual, even extrapelvic sites.…”

“…In 1913, he described vascular features related to uterine myoma and the unique venous drainage underlying abnormal uterine bleeding. 7 In 1918, he demonstrated a metastatic mechanism that can form the basis of a theory for endometriosis in unusual locations. 8 His betterknown theory of an implantation mechanism following retrograde menstruation was a later idea published in 1927.…”

“…ver the past year we have carefully read the 18 published works of American gynaecologist John Albertson Sampson (1873Sampson ( -1946 that we were able to trace, in order to better understand the vascular make-up of the human uterus and the mechanism by which intramural leiomyomata cause dysfunction. In this respect his publications of 1912, 1913 and 1918 provided unique insight into the venous drainage system, explaining how even relatively small fibroids, remote from the endometrial cavity, can cause adverse symptoms (Sampson, 1918;Yovich et al, 2019). We also discovered that Sampson's pioneering research endeavours uncovered two mechanisms that explain the pathogenesis of virtually all cases of both pelvic and non-pelvic endometriosis, but his work these days is poorly presented.…”

“…Uterine myomas may have significant detrimental effects on menstruation and fertility. Regardless of their location within the uterus, they may reduce the chance of successful embryo implantation (clinical pregnancy) by 50% and increase the risk of pregnancy loss (1). While the negative impact of myomas on fertility seems clear, there is still no strong evidence regarding the influence of their removal on conception.…”
