In addition to conventional exergy-based methods, advanced exergetic analyses consider the interactions among components of the energy-conversion system and the real potential for improving each system component.The paper demonstrates the results of application of a detailed advanced exergetic analysis to a wastewater source heat pump providing space heating in the built environment. In order to determine thermodynamic parameters of the refrigeration vapour compression cycle in different operating modes, the simulation model has been used. The analysis includes splitting the exergy destruction within each component of a heat pump into unavoidable, avoidable, endogenous and exogenous parts as well as detailed splitting of the avoidable exogenous exergy destruction. Besides, variabilities of heating demands of a building within both the chosen heating season and also from year to year are taken into account. Distribution of the split exergy destructions during different periods of time is also presented for the analysed cases of the heat pump and built environment. It is shown that in the investigated system only about 50% of the total annual destruction in components of the heat pump can be avoided. About 30…40% of this avoidable thermodynamic inefficiency is caused by interactions among components. Based on the applied advanced exergetic analysis it is possible to receive more precise and useful information for better understanding and improving the design and operation of the analysed energy-conversion system.

Gas turbine power plants have been widely studied, and as a result the negative effects on their output power and thermal efficiency have been known when operating in atmospheric conditions exceeding ISO conditions. For this reason, different technologies and methodologies have been implemented, aiming to increase the output power and improve the thermal efficiency. Unfortunately, the lack of operational parameters for this system limited its characterization and implementation of strategies to improve its performance. Advanced exergetic and exergoeconomic analyses have been applied to improve energy and economic performance in steam injection gas turbine (STIG) cycle power plants with air cooling with a compression refrigeration machine. Results shows that the main sources of irreversibilities and higher costs are in the Combustion Chamber (CC), Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) and Gas Turbine (GT). From these components, the components of the HRSG and GT have the greatest potential for improvement, and this can be achieved by improving the overall configuration of the system, due to the fact that the destruction of exogenous exergy is in more significant measure avoidable. While the higher costs of investment can be reduced in the Combustion Chamber and Gas Turbine.

In this study, a basic organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is introduced in an air separation process for waste heat recovery. Conventional and advanced exergy analyses are adopted to investigate the thermodynamic properties of components in the ORC. A comprehensive thermodynamic model is constructed to improve the advanced exergy analysis in the ORC, thereby encompassing real, theoretical, unavoidable, and hybrid cycles. Nine organic working fluids are introduced to investigate the influence on the ORC performance. ( 1) The conventional exergy analysis reveals the following: (a) The expander constantly demonstrates the maximum exergy efficiency except when R227ea is used. (b) The evaporator constantly exhibits the maximum exergy destruction regardless of the working fluid used. (c) The maximum product exergy is obtained when R114 is used. (d) Key components must focus on the condenser and evaporator to improve the ORC performance.(2) The advanced exergy analysis reveals that the expander demonstrates maximum potential for improvement because its endogenous avoidable exergy destruction accounts for approximately 90% of its real exergy destruction for all working fluids. The expander must be improved to achieve the optimal ORC performance. The advanced exergy analysis can distinguish the source of exergy destruction and the magnitude for possible improvement via the proposed thermodynamic model in this study. The comprehensive thermodynamic model can promote the investigation of the advanced exergy analysis in the ORC.Applying conventional and advanced exergy analyses to investigate the thermodynamic performance of a system or its components is highly recommended.
