With the launch of a mega drilling project in the Middle East, the drilling data during the execution stage was collected in two formats; Low-Frequency Data and High-Frequency Data. This paper explains the effective utilization of data in the performance enhancement scheme. The paper also demonstrates the combination of Low-frequency and High-frequency data can reveal the many secrets of the drilling operations and can open the many sides of drilling operations for improvements. Low-Frequency data was entered manually at the rig-site using an improved coding system to identify the activities start and end times. High-Frequency data was collected through real-time transmission from the different data streaming services at the rig-site. Both data forms were collected simultaneously using stringent rules and close follow-ups to make sure that data collection was free of any reporting mistakes and gaps. Later, the collected data was extracted for different types of analyses and interpretations. Low-frequency data was studied in a novel way to get the best analytical and critical outcome to make sure that the right areas for improvements were identified and actions were implemented for enhanced performance. Improved operations coding system helped the team to categorize the operations and failures in an effective way to set new standards in data analysis. More than 100 different types of analyses using the best data analysis technique, such as trailing average, normalization, trends, etc., were conducted based on the information collected during the execution phase, and many new KPIs were established with challenging milestones to be achieved in the prescribed period. High-Frequency data was split into different sets of KPIs to identify the multiple Invisible Lost Time (ILT) areas to boost the operational efficiency. Various performance enhancement schemes were developed based on High-frequency data. As a result, these schemes were proven to enhance the performance of the mega drilling project. This paper discusses the novel methods of drilling data analysis based on low and high-frequency data and shows the effectiveness of the data presented in a standardized format over a period. It deliberates how the teams were challenged to enhance the performance. Such detailed data analysis will bring valuable information for the industry to utilize the conventional database in modernized ways to get the best outcomes from the data analysis results.

Summary Proppant flowback from hydraulic fracturing is widespread and costly due to erosion and/or blockage of producing hydrocarbons as proppant may accumulate downhole. Several strategies have been applied to avoid or minimize proppant flowback, such as treatment optimization to maximize pack stability, resin-coated proppant, limiting drawdown, or letting it flow to deal with the consequences later. Another strategy to avoid proppant flowback is to install sand control equipment integrated into a sliding sleeve device (SSD) as part of the completion string. Although the presence of sand control equipment can mitigate the problem, it raises concern about erosion during fracturing. Although some installations have been successful, one is known to have experienced sand control failure. This study aimed to understand the effect of hydraulic fracturing on the erosion of completion equipment with an objective of improving the design to, as much as possible, prevent erosion failure. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to evaluate the root cause and identify more robust design solutions. The first step was to identify the most probable causes of sand control failure during multistage fracturing (MSF) in openhole (OH) horizontals. The as-is completion was then modeled, along with the screen, SSD, fracturing port, and OH isolation packer. Because the fracture location between two packers is unknown, and the fracturing port was located between multiple screen/SSD assemblies, annular flow across the assembly in both directions was considered. State-of-the-art CFD simulations were then performed on the installed design using actual flow conditions (rates, slurry properties, treatment time) from the failed installation. A new quasidynamic mesh (QDM) methodology was developed, which yielded more realistic (albeit still conservative) erosion-depth predictions. The results revealed areas for improving the design of key components of the 10-ksi-rated system, and CFD was rerun to confirm erosion resistance targets. Design modifications were implemented, and improved products were then manufactured and field tested. For a new 15-ksi design, particle–particle interaction was added to the CFD analysis. The results of the CFD analysis and field test are presented herein.

This Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) field re-development of a giant offshore field in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) requires in most cases extremely long laterals to reach the defined reservoir targets. However, certain areas of the field show permeability and / or pressure variations along the horizontal laterals. This heterogeneity requires an inflow control device (ICD) lower completion liner to deliver the required well performance that will adequately produce and sweep the reservoir. The ICD lower completion along with the extremely long laterals means significant time is spent switching the well from reservoir drilling fluid (RDF) non-aqueous fluid (NAF) to an aqueous completion brine. To reduce the amount of rig time spent on the displacement portion of the completion phase, an innovative technology was developed to enable the ICDs to be run in hole in a closed position and enable circulating through the end of the liner. The technology uses a dissolvable material, which is installed in the ICD to temporarily plug it. The dissolvable material is inert to the RDF NAF while the ICDs are run into hole, and then dissolves in brine after the well is displaced from RDF NAF to completion brine, changing the ICDs from closed to an open position. The ability to circulate through the end of the liner, with the support of the plugged ICDs, when the lower completion is deployed and at total depth (TD), enables switching the well from RDF NAF drilling fluid to an aqueous completion brine without the associated rig time of the original displacement method. The technique eliminates the use of a dedicated inner displacement string and allows for the displacement to be performed with the liner running string, saving 4-5 days per well. An added bonus is that the unique design allowed for this feature to be retrofitted to existing standard ICDs providing improved inventory control. In this paper the authors will demonstrate the technology and system developed to perform this operation, as well as the qualification testing, field installations, and lessons learned that were required to take this solution from concept to successful performance improvement initiative.
