Advanced Bio‐Based UV‐Curable Anticorrosive Coatings Reinforced by hBN

Abstract: Here, furfuryl methacrylate (FAM) was first successfully synthesized. Bulk hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheets were exfoliated and dispersed in FAM based on the strong π-π interaction between hBN and FAM. The few-layer hBN nanosheets as-prepared possessed an average thickness of ∼ 3 nm (less than 10 layers) and exhibited superior storage stabilization under environment condition in FAM. Moreover, we creatively applied FAM solutions containing 0.25-0.75 wt% of hBN as reactive diluents for the epoxidized so… Show more

“…from epoxidized squan1osa oil that showed acceptable corrosion pro tection of steel or aluminium alloy substt•ates in 10 wt.% NaOH, HCl or NH 4 0H solutions, but lower protection in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. More recently, interesting protective properties were shown with acry lated epoxidized oils mattices cured by thermal or UV radical poly merization [11][12][13][14].…”

“…These coatings from vegetable oils, in the absence of corrosion in hibitors or fillers, usually present lower protective performance compared to conventional materials affecting the long-term sustain ability [12,20). To improve the corrosion protection, these new pro tective systems must have both good barrier properties and good adhesion to the metal substt•ate.…”

“…Zhao et al 17 reported that the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified hBN nanosheets could be well distributed in EP matrix to improve significantly the barrier and anticorrosion properties of EP coatings. Recently, Yu et al 18 demonstrated that furfuryl methacrylate (FAM) could stabilize effectively hBN nanosheets and increase the compatibility between hBN nanosheets and UV-curable coatings. However, these modification strategies involved a tedious preparation process and the dispersants could not block the penetration of aggressive species, thus usually leading to increased cost and modest corrosion protection performance.…”

“…Moreover, the E corr value of the nGNS 0.3 coating is significantly less negative than that of the pure WEP and other two nGNS/WEP composite coatings, confirming that the nGNS 0.3 coating possessed the best anticorrosion performance for steel substrates. The R p values could be used to evaluate the anticorrosion performance of different coatings. The pure WEP coating presented the worst R p value, about 2–3 orders of magnitude lower than the nGNS/WEP composite coatings. Compared to the pure WEP coating (6.152 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 ), the R p value of the nGNS 0.1 (2.137 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 ) coating increased by 3374%, suggesting that the corrosion resistance of the coating could be greatly improved by embedding a small amount of nGNS.…”
