Tech Mining seeks to extract intelligence from Science, Technology & Innovation information record sets on a subject of interest. A key set of Tech Mining interests concerns which R&D activities are addressed in the publication and patent abstract records under study. This paper presents six "term clumping" steps that can clean and consolidate topical content in such text sources. It examines how each step changes the content, potentially to facilitate extraction of usable intelligence as the end goal. We illustrate for an emerging technology, dye-sensitized solar cells. In this case we were able to reduce some 90,980 terms & phrases to more user-friendly sets through the clumping steps as one indicator of success. The resulting phrases are better suited to contributing usable technical intelligence than the original results. We engaged seven persons knowledgeable about dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to assess the resulting content. These empirical results advanced the development of a semi-automated term clumping process that can enable extraction of topical content intelligence.

A new model to identify the productivity of theses in terms of articles using co-word analysis

A thesis defense should be considered as not the end but the starting point for scientific communication flow. How many articles truly extend doctoral research? This article proposes a new model to automatically identify the productivity of theses in terms of article publications. We evaluate the use of the co-word analysis technique to establish relationships among 401 doctoral theses and 2,211 articles journal articles published by students in a graduate program at a Brazilian National Nuclear Research Institution (IPEN-CNEN/SP).To identify the relationship between a thesis and an article published by the same author, we used co-descriptor pairs from a controlled vocabulary. To validate the proposed model, a survey was applied to a random sample of theses authors (n = 128, response rate of 79%), thus establishing a minimum threshold of three coincident co-descriptors to identify the relationship between theses and articles. The agreement level between an author's opinion and the automatic method was 86.9%, with a sampling error of 7.36%, which indicates an acceptable level of accuracy. Differences between the related or nonrelated distributions of articles were also demonstrated, as was a reduction in the median lag time to publication and the supervisor's influence on student productivity.

Resumen: La evaluación de la ciencia es importante para apoyar los procesos de decisión y de gestión en materia de política científica. Visto como un sistema, los resultados de la actividad científica (indicadores de output), se pueden evaluar a través de estudios bibliométricos, cienciométricos y webométricos. En general estos estudios se realizan utilizando las bases de datos del Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Uno de los problemas mayores con el uso de estas bases de datos es el manejo de nombres de autores, principalmente hispanos. El propósito de este trabajo fue el identificar la cobertura de los nombres de los miembros del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) de México en la base de datos National Citation Report-México (NCR), de ISI. El objetivo final fue el de construir una metodología que ayude a incrementar la recuperación y precisión en la validez de los datos confrontados del SNI, en NCR. El estudio se realizó en dos fases. La primera consistió en identificar la cobertura de los 9,201 miembros del SNI en NCR, para el periodo 1984-2002. Para la segunda fase se seleccionó una muestra de 658 nombres, y se realizó una búsqueda exhaustiva de autores en NCR, incluyendo criterios de validación. Los resultados ayudaron a construir una metodología que culminó en el agrupamiento de cuatro categorías de nombres con diferentes niveles de dificultad y certeza en la recuperación de registros en NCR. Con esta metodología se logró incrementar hasta en 26,9% la recuperación de registros. El documento presenta el modelo conceptual de esta metodología emergente; describe las líneas de investigación a seguir y discute sobre las implicaciones de este tipo de estudios.
