Adulthood in Women with Turner Syndrome

Abstract: Turner syndrome, resulting from a complete or partial absence of one X chromosome, is the most commonly occurring chromosomal abnormality in females. Patients have traditionally been carefully followed in paediatric practice during childhood, but were often discharged to primary care on reaching adulthood. Adults with Turner syndrome are thought to have a reduced life expectancy, mainly due to excess cardiovascular risk, but they may also have multiple comorbidities including hypothyroidism, deafness, osteopor… Show more

“…However, their results were only based upon the broad-band scales. It is somewhat surprising that our TS patients had lower scores on the somatic complaints subscale than the non-TS reference group as TS patients are often confronted with TS specific health problems [2, 3]. This may be due to the fact that the YASR somatic complaints subscale does not measure TS specific somatic problems such as hearing problems, cardiac disease, hypothyroidism or hypertension.…”

“…Although it has been well-established that adults with TS are susceptible to a large range of medical and psychosocial problems [2, 3], psychological studies in adult women with TS report a large variability regarding psychosocial adaptation and functioning [4,5,6,7,8,9,10]. Moreover, the effects of height and height gain from growth hormone (GH) treatment on psychosocial functioning still remain unclear [11,12,13] and the effects of oestrogen replacement therapy have only been studied on self-concept and cognitive abilities in adolescents [14,15,16].…”

“…Of our patients, 5.8% reported to be hypothyroid. Some disorders, like the fertility problems, are important for personal life and might create problems in the life of a couple [2]. Also the high frequency of hearing problems [4, 14]has a major influence on social life.…”

“…Most of the patients are diagnosed during childhood [2]and received intensive medical follow-up by paediatric endocrinologists taking care of growth-promoting treatment with recombinant growth hormone (GH) and puberty induction with estrogens, if indicated [3]. Although it has been increasingly evident that adults with TS are susceptible to a large range of medical and psychosocial problems [2, 4], little is known about what happens to these patients after transition to adulthood, and many patients seem to ‘opt out’ of the medical milieu when they reach adulthood [5]. Moreover, limited information is available on the long-lasting effect of GH treatment during childhood on health and psychosocial functioning of adult TS women.…”

“…Se debe prestar especial atención a los pacientes que presenten en su cariotipo un cromosoma Y en alguna línea celular, pues este hallazgo tiene gran relación con la aparición de un extraño tumor, el gonadoblastoma, en el 30% de los casos (7,8,23,24).…”
