We investigated the role that cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) play in sexual communication by the mustard leaf beetle, Phaedon cochleariae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In laboratory bioassays, male P. cochleariae attempted to copulate with living or freeze-killed females as often as with males. However, the duration of copulation with females was longer than with males. To elucidate the impact of CHC on this behavior, cuticular compounds of adults of both sexes were extracted with dichloromethane. Male mating attempts with glass beads treated with the dichloromethane extract were nearly as frequent as with living beetles. The dichloromethane extract was fractionated by silica gel chromatography, and the biological activity of the fractions was tested by applying them to glass beads. A non-polar hexane fraction significantly elicited mating behavior, whereas the polar methanol fraction did not, likely because it contained defensive compounds from exocrine glands located in the elytra and pronota. Interestingly, a mixture of both the non-polar and polar fraction tended to elicit more mating attempts than did the non-polar hexane fraction alone. Further fractionation of the significantly active hexane fraction by silver nitrate column chromatography revealed that saturated CHC elicited mating behavior, but the olefins did not. GC-MS analyses of dichloromethane cuticular extracts showed that the male and female CHC profiles were qualitatively identical, but differed in their relative composition. Canonical discriminant analysis showed that CHC profiles of males and females formed separate clusters. Nevertheless, the results of our bioassays demonstrated that male and female CHC did not elicit sex discriminative male behavior, but induced mating by males regardless of the sex of the partner.

Most plant families are distinguished by characteristic secondary metabolites, which can function as putative defence against herbivores. However, many herbivorous insects of different orders can make use of these plant-synthesised compounds by ingesting and storing them in their body tissue or integument. Such sequestration of putatively unpalatable or toxic metabolites can enhance the insects' own defence against enemies and may also be involved in reproductive behaviour. This review gives a comprehensive overview of all groups of secondary plant metabolites for which sequestration by insect herbivores belonging to different orders has been demonstrated. Sequestered compounds include various aromatic compounds, nitrogen-containing metabolites such as alkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, glucosinolates and other sulphurcontaining metabolites, and isoprenoids such as cardiac glycosides, cucurbitacins, iridoid glycosides and others. Sequestration of plant compounds has been investigated most in insects feeding or gathering on Apocynaceae s.l. (Apocynoideae, Asclepiaoideae), Aristolochiaceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Fabaceae and Plantaginaceae, but it also occurs for some gymnosperms and even lichens. In total, more than 250 insect species have been shown to sequester plant metabolites from at least 40 plant families. Sequestration predominates in the Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, but also occurs frequently in the orders Heteroptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera and Sternorrhyncha. Patterns of sequestration mechanisms for various compound classes and common or individual features occurring in different insect orders are highlighted. More research is needed to elucidate the specific transport mechanisms and the physiological processes of sequestration in various insect species.

ABSTRACT:The paper deals with the occurrence, development and harmfulness of imported willow leaf beetle (Plagiodera versicolora Laich.) in riparian and accompanying stands of the Svratka and Svitava rivers in the region of Brno. Salix fragilis L. and S. × rubens Schr. are the most damaged species there. Imagoes leave wintering places usually at the beginning of May. During about a 60-day period, they damage ca. 23.3 cm 2 leaves of S. fragilis and lay 250 to 730 (on average 539) eggs. The whole egg-laying consists of 16 to 48 (on average 35.5) groups with 6 to 26 (on average 15.2) eggs. The fecundity of females hatched in the laboratory is minimally twice lower. Larvae hatch after 5 to 8 (in the laboratory after 4.3) days and damage about 282 mm 2 leaves. The development from laying eggs until hatching imagoes of the 1 st generation takes about 21 (in the laboratory about 15) days. Imagoes of the 1 st generation occur on trees from the end of May to mid-August and die after completing their reproduction. Plagiodera versicolora creates 3 to 4 (in the laboratory 4 to 6) generations during a year. The small part of imagoes of the 2 nd generation, predominant part (or all) imagoes of the 3 rd generation and under conditions of a tetravoltine development all imagoes of the 4 th generation enter a diapause. In the course of the growing season, the food consumption of imagoes and larvae decreases and fecundity of females markedly decreases. Schizonotus sieboldi (Ratz.), Medina melania (Meig.) and M. luctuosa (Meig.) rank among main enemies of Plagiodera versicolora.
