Adult onset of ganglioneuroblastoma of the adrenal gland: case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Ganglioneuroblastoma (GBN) is a malignant neoplasm of the autonomic nervous system. Adult onset of ganglioneuroblastoma is extremely rare. Only 16 cases have been reported in English literature, to date. Surgery represents the first-line therapy for the treatment of ganglioneuroblastoma. Radiation therapy is indicated in patients with localized unresectable disease. Chemotherapy is reserved for metastatic disease. We present the case of a 63-year-old man affected by ganglioneuroblastoma of the adren… Show more

“…[ 8 ] Therefore, the patients should be followed closely (i.e., every 3 months for the first and second years, then every 6 months thereafter). Since high levels of catecholamine are related to recurrence, [ 2 ] Bolzacchini et al [ 18 ] suggested that blood count, urinary catecholamine analysis, and imaging should be performed at every examination. Scintigraphy with 131 iodine-methyliodobenzylguanidine, which can help to detect bone metastasis, is recommended to perform every 6 months, which can help detect bone metastasis, [ 7 , 19 ] .…”

“…N-myc amplification was found to occur only in around 2% to 3.1% and 0% of 32 GNBLs and 10 GNs, respectively ( 41 , 52 ). In contrast, adult-onset NBLs and GNBLs are extremely rare, with fewer than 100 cases of these tumors having been reported in adults in the English medical literature to date ( 53 , 54 ). In comparison to pediatric cases, N-myc is less frequently amplified in adult-onset cases ( 53 ).…”

“…GNBs frequently occur in children, but their onset in adults is extremely rare [ 4 ]. Adult GNBs have a high potential to be malignant, and there have been many reports of distant metastasis to various organs, including the liver and bones [ 5 ].…”

“…In our case, GNB developed in the adrenal gland. Including this case, there have been only 14 case reports in the English-language literature on GNB in adult adrenal glands [ 4 16 ], except for composite types with pheochromocytomas. Among these 14 cases, only four (including the present case) involved catecholamine-producing GNBs [ 6 8 ] (Table 2 ).…”
