Adult obesity, disease and longevity in Mexico

Abstract: Objective To obtain estimates of the effects of overweight and obesity on the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and adult mortality. Materials and methods We use three waves (2000, 2002, 2012) of the Mexican Health and Aging Survey (MHAS). We employ parametric hazard models to estimate mortality and conventional logistic models to estimate incidence of T2D. Results Obesity and overweight have a strong effect on the incidence of T2D; this, combined with the large impact of diabetes on adult mortality, gene… Show more

“…It is important to note that the reported association of alcohol consumption with HA is not consistent, and many have not found a significant relationship [24]. In Mexico, two previous studies analyzed the association between excess body weight and overall mortality and found a significant relationship [4,12]. In our study, in the HR analysis, overweight and obesity increased the risk of losing HA, and no relationship was found with HA77 and HA90.…”

“…Attaining healthy aging (HA) has become a public health challenge, and it is fundamental to identify the variables that are associated with it. Previous studies in Europe and US have found that a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors plays a critical role in HA [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Prior studies in Caucasian populations showed that individuals with long-lived parents tend to be healthy agers [3,8], and some studies have found associations with the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene [8].…”

“…This result can have important implications for the health status of the upcoming aging population and the future mortality prospects of older Mexican adults. For instance, there is evidence indicating that diabetes is associated with large reductions in overall life expectancy 15 and disability-free life expectancy among older Mexican adults. 16 …”

“…In Mexico statistics are impressive, and alarming. According to The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) places the country in the first quintile of the obesity distribution in America 1 . A growing number of patients are undergoing surgical treatment for their morbid obesity.…”
