Adult Hepatitis B Virus Vaccination Coverage in China from 2011 to 2021: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Background: The most effective way to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is vaccination. Synthesized data on vaccination coverage in adults against hepatitis B in China are scarce. We aimed to estimate the hepatitis B vaccination rate in adults in China. Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, and Sinomed databases for observational studies published between 1 January 2011 and 1 October 2021. Data were extracted using a standardized form t… Show more

“…Although vaccination against HBV has greatly reduced the infection rate, there are still 5–10% of the population that remains unprotected due to waned immunity over time [ 4 ]. In addition, the limited vaccination coverage is accountable for a major portion of new HBV infections [ 5 ]. Currently, approximately 257 million people are living with chronic HBV infection and 25 – 40% % of them have the lifetime risk of developing adverse outcomes HCC or cirrhosis [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Nevertheless, when better dissecting the vaccination rates among household contacts of Chinese patients, we found a practical universal coverage in relatives born in Spain (where HBV vaccination is universal since 1991), compared to rates below 60% in those born in China. The latter re ects the lower vaccination coverage in China in the adult population (19). Thus, results from our study emphasize the need to (20) further promote vaccination among this group of individuals at risk.…”
