Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a comprehensive review

Abstract: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder, with only 2–3% prevalence into adulthood. The epidemiology and proposed causes of ADHD are multifactorial, including genetic, prenatal and environmental influences. The diagnosis of ADHD is often complicated by masking coping mechanisms, an overlap of symptoms with other, more commonly diagnosed disorders. Traditionally, it has been treated with stimulant medications. Non-stimulant options often target norepinephrine and dopamine r… Show more

“…Epstein et al (2016) have emphasized the value of close monitoring of individuals being treated for ADHD with stimulants, and guidelines are emerging for assessment and treatment of ADHD in adults (Asherson et al, 2022), although best methodology for follow-up has not been established. For adolescents and adults, difficulties with sustained attention and distractibility would seem to be an excellent target for monitoring stimulant treatment, since it typically is a major concern after puberty (Manos & Short, 2023; Williams et al, 2023). Although questionnaires can be helpful, they are not objective and probably are best utilized with both self-report and observers such as teachers or work supervisors.…”

“…When cannabinoids are consumed orally, they undergo first-pass metabolism in the liver before entering the bloodstream. Once THC enters the liver, it undergoes enzymatic conversion into 11-hydroxy-Δ 9 -tetrahydrocannabinol, which is known to be more potent and longer-lasting than THC itself [68]. Unlike other routes of administration, such as smoking or vaporization, where THC is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and reaches the brain almost immediately, oral ingestion results in a slower onset of effects due to the need for digestion and metabolism.…”

“…PTSD, a psychiatric condition, emerges following exposure to actual or potential harm, including experiences of injury, death, or sexual assault, leading to significant functional and cognitive difficulties [ 8 ]. Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), have undergone diagnostic advancements over time [ 9 , 10 ]. ADHD is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity [ 11 ].…”
