Carbon adsorbents derived from biomass (agricultural and household residues) have been widely used in the sequestration of hazardous substances from the environment due to their distinctive qualities of large internal surface area, mechanical integrity, and regeneration. The need for carbon adsorbents for sequestration of dyes, heavy metals, and crude oil components has increased because of environmental concerns. This has led to studies of carbon adsorbents derived from agricultural and household biomass residues. These adsorbents have been used to remove pollutants. Although numerous reviews have been published before, analogy of results obtained using different adsorbents is hard due to dissimilarities in research data. Against this backdrop, the purpose of the research survey was to review the contemporary publications regarding the production of activated carbon from biomass sources highlighting specifically its utilization in removing toxic wastes from water solution such as oil spill, dyes, and sundry hazardous substances. Also the work focuses on the methods for the restoration of the spent adsorbents and their end use.

A B S T R A C TThis study assesses the adsorption performance of Java plum leaves and guava fruits based adsorbents as natural products widely available in Aceh, Indonesia. These renewable adsorbents were employed to remove free fatty acids (FFAs) that cause the rancid odor in coconut oil. The adsorption tests were carried out at three different doses (50, 75, 100 g) and seven agitating periods (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 h). The adsorbents were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe their morphologies, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate the functional groups. The adsorption kinetics were also analyzed using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The SEM image showed that the particle sizes of the guava fruits based adsorbent were 30-45 µm while those of Java plum leaves based adsorbent were 7-15 µm, both showing attractive range to enhance surface area for adsorption sites. FTIR spectra showed the presence of methylene, aliphatic and phenolic groups for both absorbent, aromatic and alkene groups only for java plum based adsorbent and secondary amine and alcohol groups only for guava fruit based adsorbent. Those groups seem to play important role in enhancing chemical adsorption of FFAs from the coconut oil sample. The results showed that Java plum leaves and guava fruits based adsorbents had a respective maximum adsorption capacity of 144.99 and 133.77 mg/g, with an optimum agitation time of 6 hour. The high absorption capacity could be ascribed from phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in both materials. Kinetics of adsorption of FFAs on both materials obeyed the Freundlich isotherm model indicating a multilayer and heterogeneous surface of adsorbent.

Recently, there is growing attention on the use of low-cost sorbents in the depollution of contaminated waters. As a consequence, the present work investigates the potential of soy bran and mustard husk as possible sorbent for the removal of arsenic(V) from residual water. Effects of various operating parameters such as: contact time, pH, initial arsenic concentration, pH, sorbent dose, temperature were investigated to determine the removal efficiency of arsenic(V). Thermodynamic parameters that characterize the process indicated that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. The values for the separation factor, R L were less than one which confirms that the adsorption process was favorable. Equilibrium data fitted well to the Langmuir model with a higher adsorption capacity of soy bran (74.07 mg g -1 ) towards arsenic(V) ions than mustard husk (65.79 mg g -1 ). It was found that the pseudo-second order kinetic model was the best applicable model to describe the adsorption kinetic data.
