AbstractIn this study, raw boron enrichment waste was treated with hydrochloric acid and ultrasound at 35-kHz frequency for 60 minutes. To optimize the adsorption conditions for removal of methylene blue (MB) from synthetic wastewaters using raw boron enrichment waste (BEW), acid modified boron enrichment waste (HBEW) and ultrasound modified BEW (UBEW) by adsorption process and to compare the adsorption efficiency of chemical and ultrasonic modifications of BEW were aimed. The optimum adsorption conditions were determined economically and eco-friendly aspect and MB removal percents were found as 80%, 80% and 92% at optimum conditions for BEW, HBEW and UBEW, respectively. The maximum regression coefficient values were obtained as 0.911, 0.998 and 0.984 for BEW, HBEW and UBEW, respectively at Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption rate was fitted well to pseudo-second order kinetics according to a good correlation coefficient. The adsorption of MB onto adsorbents studied is spontaneous in nature and feasible because of negative ∆G values. The results indicated that the boron enrichment process waste could be a suitable adsorbent for removal of MB from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacities were equal to about 107,0 mg/g, 160,7 mg/g and 145,3 mg/g for BEW, HBEW and UBEW adsorbents at 298 K, respectively. The maximum dye removal percent was achieved for UBEW as 92% and ultrasound assisted modification was found more efficient method compared with acidic modification for MB removal.

The ability of magnetically modified activated sludge affected by thermal treatment to remove watersoluble organic dyes was examined. Twelve different dyes were tested. Based on the results of the initial sorption study, four dyes (namely aniline blue, Nile blue, Bismarck brown Y and safranin O) were chosen for further experiments due to their promising binding onto magnetic activated sludge. Significant factors influencing adsorption efficiency such as dependence of contact time, initial pH or temperature were studied in detail. The adsorption process was very fast; more than 88 % of dye content (55 mg/L) was adsorbed within 15 min under experimental conditions used. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Freundlich, Langmuir and Sips adsorption isotherm models, and the fitting of each isotherm model to experimental data was assessed on the basis of error functions. The maximum adsorption capacities of magnetic activated sludge were 768.2, 246.9, 515.1 and 326.8 mg/g for aniline blue, Bismarck brown Y, Nile blue and safranin O, respectively. The kinetic studies indicated that adsorption of all selected dyes could be well described by the pseudosecond-order kinetic model, and the thermodynamic data suggested the spontaneous and endothermic process.

Incineration is a traditional method of treating sewage sludge and the disposal of derived ash is a problem of secondary waste treatment. In this study, sewage sludge ash (SSA) was coated with ferrite through a ferrite process and then used as an adsorbent for ionic dyes (methylene blue [MB] and Procion Red MX-5B [PR]). The modified SSA possessed surface potential that provided electrostatic attraction toward MB and PR. Adsorbent FA10 (named on the basis of being produced from 10 g of SSA in the ferrite process) was used for the adsorption of MB. Ideal pH for adsorption was 9.0 and maximum adsorption capacity based on Langmuir isotherm equation was 22.03 mg/g. Adsorbent FA2.5 (named on the basis of being produced from 2.5 g of SSA in the ferrite process) was used for PR adsorption. Ideal pH for adsorption was 3.0 and the maximum adsorption capacity (calculated as above) was 28.82 mg/g. Kinetic results reveal that both MB and PR adsorption fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model better than the pseudo-firstorder model. The values of activation energy calculated from rate constants were 61.71 and 9.07 kJ/mol for MB and PR, respectively. Implications: Magnetic modified adsorbent could be synthesized from sewage sludge ash (SSA). In this study, the adsorption ability of SSA toward ionic dye (methylene blue [MB] and Procion Red MX-5B [PR]) was enhanced by ferrite process. The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 can act as an active site and provide electrostatic attraction toward cationic dye and anionic dye at different pH. The application of magnetic modified adsorbent in wastewater treatment can not only recycle the SSA, but also make SSA become an environmentally friendly material.
