Adsorption study on municipal solid waste leachate using Moringa oleifera seed

Abstract: Effects of initial concentrations of Moringa oleifera seed coagulant for removing Chemical Oxygen Demand and Total Dissolved Solids from municipal solid waste leachate have been evaluated at an optimum pH of 7 and temperature of 318 K. The kinetic data obtained from the experiments were fitted to the pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, Elovich and intraparticle diffusion models. Based on a regression coefficient (R 2 ), the equilibrium (kinetic) data were best fitted with the Elovich model (R 2 = 0.993 fo… Show more

“…In particular, the pollutant load to the environment is dependent on the quantity and the quality of the water that percolates through the landfill (Kale et al 2010, Papadopoulou et al 2007, Renou et al 2008. Thus, estimate leachate generation and transport during the life of a landfill is a key issue in order to reduce its potential risk (Sivakumar 2013). To this end, an useful tool is represented by simulation models based on the water balance method.…”

“…On the other hand, we obtained a minimum turbidity level at about 6.44 NTU and color values of 30 Pt-Co for the evaluated starches. Even though these results do not fulfil the WHO requirements, they are acceptable since these values are commonly obtained in processes of clarification of high turbidity water (Sivakumar 2013, Tassinaria et al 2013. Application of this method could be considered using some other varieties of plantains, as well as different natural products that are typical from the Caribbean region at Colombia.…”

“…It should be noticed that this research ultimately evaluates the CF stage, and that an additional filtration process could yield better results, since CF represents only a primary treatment (Sivakumar 2013).…”

“…Cost and other setbacks associated with the use of chemical coagulants including lowering water pH [23], put MO at an exceeding advantage. MO prevents the growth of coliforms, sodomonas and aeroginosen [24], this reduces potential health risks to downstream communities that make use of water bodies into which effluent is discharged. As MO is organic, its sludge can be anaerobically digested thereby increasing biogas yield unlike the use of chemical coagulants.…”
