Abstract:In this paper, imine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNP-Maph) were employed to aqueous solutions for the uptake of Zn(II) and As(III). Characterization of the material showed the successful synthesis of this material. Factors affecting the uptake of metal ions in aqueous solution such as change in pH, time, adsorbent dose, adsorbate concentration, and temperature were investigated and optimized to determine the best experimental conditions for the effective adsorption of Zn(II) and As(III) from wastewater samples. The adsorption capacity of MNP-Maph followed similar patterns as that of amine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNP-NH 2 ) for the uptake of both metal ions from aqueous solution when solution pH was varied. Higher pH values favored the uptake of Zn(II) and As(III) by using both adsorbents. Also, increasing the contact time and temperature yielded a higher uptake of Zn(II) and As(III). Both processes can best be described with a pseudo-second order kinetic model, while the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (q m ) for Zn(II) increased from 35.83 to 54.53 mg g −1 , and for As(III) from 50.08 to 57.60 mg g −1 .Of note is that the q m of As(III) was higher than that of Zn(II) because of the lower concentration of As(III) in solution compared to that of Zn(II), and thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption processes were heat absorbing and rapid in nature. Experiments to evaluate if the adsorbent could be recycled showed excellent recyclability capacity of MNP-Maph after seven runs. Lastly, application of MNP-Maph for the uptake of Zn(II) and As(III) from municipal wastewater samples showed remarkable sorption performance confirming the potential of imine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles as an excellent adsorbent for the uptake of metal ions from aqueous solutions.

Screening a new biosorbent with low cost and high efficiency from a native plant material is a key to the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater. In this study, the potential of Phytolacca americana L. as a biosorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions was investigated. Experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of biosorbent dosage, pH, initial Pb(II) concentration and contact time on the Pb(II) removal. The results indicated that the hydroxyl, carboxyl and amine groups may take part in Pb(II) binding. HNO 3 -modified P. americana (HPAL) showed a significant higher uptake capacity compared to original P. americana (PAL) (p < 0.05). A dose of 20 g L À1 of biosorbents in solutions with an initial pH of 6.0, an initial Pb(II) concentration of 30 mg L À1 and a contact time of 120 min resulted in the maximum Pb(II) removal efficiency. The Freundlich isotherm gave a better fit than the Langmuir isotherm revealed that the biosorption was potentially multilayer. Further, the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo second-order model, which implied that the biosorption was mainly a chemisorption process. The thermodynamic properties showed that the Pb(II) adsorption onto the P. americana biomass was feasible, spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Both physisorption and chemisorption were involved in the biosorption of Pb(II) onto the surface of P. americana biomass through electrostatic interaction and ion exchange. RESUMENSe propone la adsorción de Pb (II) usando bagazo de palma tratado químicamente con ácido cítrico, se elige este material por ser un desecho agroindustrial ampliamente disponible en la región Caribe colombiana. Los experimentos fueron llevados a cabo en sistema batch en solución acuosa de plomo a una concentración de 100 ppm. La determinación de la concentración de metal al final del proceso se midió por absorción atómica. La caracterización de los materiales adsorbentes usados se hizo por FTIR encontrando que los grupos hidroxilos y carboxílicos son los principales responsables de la capacidad de adsorción. Además, fue encontrado que el pH es el factor de mayor incidencia en el proceso, siendo el de 6 el valor óptimo. Por otra parte, se encontró que el Pb (II) presenta una sorción rápida durante los primeros 10 minutos, además el modelo de Elovich fue el de mejor ajuste. La capacidad máxima de adsorción según la isoterma de Langmuir fue de 162 y 451 mg/g para el bagazo sin modificar y modificado respectivamente, estableciendo que la modificación fue altamente eficiente.Palabras Clave: Adsorbente, Plomo, Residuo, Remoción, Tratamiento químico. ABSTRACTIt was studied the adsorption of Pb (II) using palm bagasse chemically treated with citric acid. This material is chosen due to is an available waste in the Colombian Caribbean region. The experiments were carried out in batch system in aqueous solution of lead at a concentration of 100 ppm. The determination of the heavy concentration at the end of the process was measured by atomic absorption. The characterization of adsorbent materials used was carry out using FTIR. It was found that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups are mainly responsible of adsorption capacities. Furthermore, it was found that the pH is the most prevalent factor in the process. The optimum value was 6. Moreover, it was found that the Pb (II) exhibits rapid sorption during the first 10 minutes. The process was better fitted by the Elovich model. The maximum adsorption capacity according to Langmuir isotherm was 162 and 451 mg/g for unmodified and modified bagasse respectively. It was established that the chemical treatment was highly efficient.
