Adsorption of the First-Line Covid Treatment Analgesic onto Activated Carbon from Residual Pods of Erythrina Speciosa

Abstract: In this study, the residual pods of the forest species Erythrina speciosa were carbonized with ZnCl 2 to obtain porous activated carbon and investigated for the adsorptive removal of the drug paracetamol (PCM) from water. The PCM adsorption onto activated carbon is favored at acidic solution pH. The isothermal studies confirmed that increasing the temperature from 298 to 328 K decreased the adsorption capacity from 65 mg g −1 to 50.4 mg g −1 (C 0 = 175 mg L −1 ). The Freundlich model showed a better fit of the… Show more

“…Following the carbonization (D), the surface became more irregular and smoother, but with the addition of cavities of varying sizes that are crucial for accommodating adsorbate molecules. The morphological structures of materials made from lignin and cellulose are typically irregular and disorganized, resembling the structure of fruit waste [ 34 , 44 , 45 ], forest seed species [ 46 , 47 , 48 ], and tree bark [ 49 , 50 , 51 ]. These irregularities are evenly distributed and contain cavities and voids that can significantly enhance adsorption [ 52 ].…”

“…The most used in studies are the Langmuir [120] and Freundlich [121] equations; both are classified as isotherms, where their parameters are temperature dependent [122]. In the literature, it is possible to observe the successful application of these models to represent different adsorbents in removing pharmaceutical compounds [123][124][125].…”

“…2. Each of these parameters presents points that must be analyzed carefully, generally, they interfere in the interaction of the pollutant with the surface of the material (Ali Redha, 2020;Georgin, Franco, Netto, Gama et al, 2022;Georgin, Franco, Netto, Manzar et al, 2022).…”
