Adsorption of Soluble Immunoglobulin‐Type Adhesion Molecules to Cellulose Acetate Beads

Abstract: Circulating levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) are elevated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Cellulose acetate (CA) beads are used as carriers for granulocyte and monocyte (GM) adsorptive apheresis (GMA). We investigated the effect of CA beads on sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 plasma concentrations in vitro. Because GM adsorption to CA beads increased with a rise in the incubation temperature in our previous study, peripheral blood was incu… Show more

“…The switch to these drugs following primary or secondary failure of anti‐TNFα agents should be weighed against adding up AC to the ongoing therapy, in the absence of dose escalation. The same applies to anti‐lymphocyte trafficking agents, in which the mechanisms of action of AC result in enhanced therapeutic efficacy 44,45,73,74 . A 30% response rate in case of failure to first‐ or second‐line biologics has been reported following AC.…”

“…Previously, we reported the adsorption of soluble adhesion molecules, such as sCD106 and sCD62L, in plasma induced by CA beads. 14 In this study, another soluble adhesion molecule, sCD62P, was measured. CA beads significantly adsorbed sCD106 and sCD62; however, there was no interaction with CA beads upon heating at 37 C (Figure 3A,B).…”
