Adsorption of Silver (I) From Aqueous Solution Using Chitosan/Montmorillonite Composite Beads

Abstract: Chitosan/montmorillonite (CTS-MMT) composite beads were used as adsorbents for the removal of silver ion (Ag + ) from aqueous solution. Equilibrium adsorption was achieved within 150 min at 3% MMT of chitosan solution. The optimum pH value for Ag + removal was found to be 6-7. The maximum adsorbent dosage for Ag + removal was 5 g/L. Under above maximum conditions the Ag + removal was 95.7%. The maximum adsorption capacities of CTS and CTS-MMT composite beads as obtained from Langmuir isotherm were found to be … Show more

“…The isoelectric point of chitosan is in the pH range between 7 and 9 [ 27 ]. The adsorption of chitosan onto wool causes a shift of the isoelectric point (IEO) to the right (i.e., higher pH values).…”

“…However, in another study [20], even with pre-vortex-mixing, equilibrium in Ag concentration could not be reached in less than 6 hours, with the co-existence of Hg ions. On the other hand, for liquid-solid adsorption, typical equilibrium contact time ranges from 0.25 to 2.5 hours [22,31]. It should be noted, however, that this liquid-liquid sorption is still untapped.…”

“…Also, considering its attractive characteristic optical properties, unrivaled electrical and thermal conductivities, and reduction (electrochemical) potential of +0.8 V. Ag, as well as its compounds finds application in the making of jewelries and ornaments, in photography, in mirror production, in electronics (where it serves as ideal conductor for printed circuit boards), in electrochemistry (where it is used for battery electrode, for electroplating, as reference electrode in the 3-electrode testing system and in potentiometric pH measuring devices, as oxidation or corrosion resistant material), etc. [3,[21][22][23]. Moreover, Ag has inherent antimicrobial properties, and therefore used for disinfection, hygiene, personal care, and healthcare [24][25][26].…”

“…Hybrid composites based on organic polymers and organosilicon compounds are materials that combine the best properties of both synthetic and mineral adsorbents [1][2][3]. The presence of a functionalized organic polymer in their composition is responsible for the chemisorption activity, and the silicon unit determines the morphological characteristics, as well as enhanced mechanical and thermal stability.…”
