Adsorption of Polymeric Inclusion Compounds on Muscovite Mica

Abstract: α-Cyclodextrin, α-CD, which does not adsorb on mica, can be bound to this surface as a polymeric inclusion compound that is formed by threading many α-CD rings on a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(decamethylenebipyridinium dibromide). The major driving force of the adsorption of the polymer and the polymeric inclusion compound is ion exchange with surface ions of mica. Somewhat less polymer is adsorbed when it is engaged in the inclusion complex than as pure polymer. The rates of adsorption for both the polymer… Show more

“…The most characteristic feature of these ''beads-on-a-string'' dynamic systems is that the cyclic components can spin around the axes of the polymer as well as move back and forth along the polymer chain. The cavity of cyclodextrins, particularly of aCD and bCD, has been shown to be well adapted to pseudopolyrotaxane formation with linear polymers [119][120][121] such as poly-(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) or poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF). 122 If the CD beads are part of a glycoconjugate, then a ''mobile'' display of the coating sugar ligand is obtained, with the potential to self-fit the intersaccharide distance and orientation in the presence of a given receptor partner for an optimal interaction (Fig.…”

“…XPS measurements show that after immersion of the mica in the LiCl solution for more than 3 days, the recorded potassium signal does not decrease further, which confirms a complete exchange of the surface K with Li ions. The exchange with Li ions ensures that a subsequent exchange with the surfactant ions is complete, as lithium ions can be exchanged easier than potassium ions (9,25,35).…”
