Adsorption of platinum(IV) from an aqueous solution with magnetic cellulose functionalized with thiol and amine as a nano‐active adsorbent

Abstract: In this study, magnetic cellulose was prepared and then functionalized by the grafting of glycidyl methacrylate and reaction with thiourea/amine [to produce grafted magnetic cellulose with thiol/amine (GMC-N/S)]. Thus, GMC-N/S as a nano-active adsorbent was investigated for the adsorption of Pt(IV) in a batch system. A response surface methodology was used to study the effects of four independent variables [Pt(IV) concentration, temperature, pH of the solution, and adsorbent dose] and to optimize the process c… Show more

“…In previous research about pollutants removal from aqueous, various ferritic cellulose derivatives such as ZnFe2O4@CMC, ZnFe2O4@CMC, CuFe2O4@MC and CoFe2O4/AC@chitosan due to the renewability, cellulose stable nature reasonable price, and availability have been prepared and applied as sorbents or photocatalysts [33,34]. Also, several cellulosic adsorbents such as attapulgite/chitosan (ATP/CS) [44], chitosan-cellulose enwrapped magnetic carbon foam (CCMF), carboxylated cellulose/MnFe2O4 aerogel [45], magnetic-PEI-cellulose [46], Fe3O4@SiO2@Cellulose [47], Fe3O4@CMC@PDA [48] [49], grafted magnetic cellulose with thiol/amine (GMC-N/S) [50], magnetic carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal composite (CCN-Fe3O4) [51], Magnetic chitosan/cellulose [52], magnetic hydrogel beads (m-CS/PVA/CCNFs) [53], amino-functionalized magnetic cellulose composite [49], magnetic cellulose-chitosan hydrogels have been used for the pollutants removal from aqueous solutions [48].…”

“…Among them, nano-sized metal oxides demonstrated to be promising materials for metal removal from wastewaters [4,6,7]. As an example, in several recent studies functionalized materials have been used as adsorbents for platinum(IV) in aqueous solution [8].…”

“…It is also important to develop protection strategies to stabilize the magnetic nanoparticles against their degradation, such as core-shell, which are also used for functionalization of the adsorbent material for selective application. Hence, if the surface of magnetite is coated with a compound containing a thiol or amino group, the removal of metals should be enhanced enabling, in addition, the magnetic separation of the adsorbent from the solution [8,12,13,14,15,16].…”
