Adsorption of organic contaminants by graphene nanosheets, carbon nanotubes and granular activated carbons under natural organic matter preloading conditions

Abstract: The effect of NOM preloading on the adsorption of phenanthrene (PNT) and trichloroethylene (TCE) by pristine graphene nanosheets (GNS) and graphene oxide nanosheet (GO) was investigated and compared with those of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and two coal based granular activated carbons (GACs). PNT uptake was higher than TCE by all adsorbents on both mass and surface area bases. This was attributed to the hydrophobicity of PNT. The adsorption capacities of PN… Show more

“…Activated carbons are well known adsorbents in different fields, with environmental applications such as the adsorption of ions in dissolution or to mitigate gas emissions, [13][14][15][16][17] and are used clinically to treat accidental or deliberate drug overdoses, etc. [18][19][20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…It suggests that the pore-filling mechanism is mostly responsible for the adsorption. Generally, small-size organic compounds are responsible for pore-filling [43,53]. In addition, the octanol-water partitioning coefficient (log K ow ), an indicator of hydrophobicity of an organic compound, plays an important role in the adsorption [1].…”

“…The number of pores for a given matrix-CNT composite are fixed. This leads to competitive adsorption effects that take place in effluent mixtures, most commonly in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) [22,48,49,50,51,52].…”
