We use density functional theory to investigate adsorption on the solid surfaces modified with end-grafted chains with embedded attractive groups. The chains are modelled as freely joined spheres. They consist of segments A and a short block of segments B that mimics the functional group. The fluid molecules are spherical. All species interact via the Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential. The substrate is inert with respect to the chain segments and free molecules. We investigate the impact of the position of the B-block on adsorption of pure fluids, adsorption from binary solutions, the selectivity of the adsorption systems as well as on the structure of the bonded phase.

Theoretical descriptions of static properties of polymer brushes are reviewed, with an emphasis on monodisperse macromolecules grafted to planar, cylindrical, or spherical substrates. Blob concepts and resulting scaling relations are outlined, and various versions of the self-consistent field theory are summarized: the classical approximation and the strong stretching limit, as well as the lattice formulation. The physical justification of various inherent assumptions is discussed, and computer simulation results addressing the test of the validity of these approximations are reviewed. Also, alternative theories, such as the single chain mean field theory and the density functional theory, are briefly mentioned, and the main facts about the models used in the computer simulations are summarized. Both molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations are described, the latter including lattice models and bead-spring models in the continuum. Also extensions such as brush-brush interactions or nanoparticles inside of brushes as well as the solubility of free chains in brushes are briefly mentioned. Pertinent experimental results, though still somewhat scarce, are mentioned throughout and their consequences on the status of the theoretical understanding of polymer brushes is emphasized.

Adsorption of dumbbell-shaped particles on polymer-tethered surfaces is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The bonded layers are built of chains containing "active groups", while the particles consist of two "chemically" different monomers. We analyze the structure of the surface layers, the excess adsorption isotherms of the dumbbells and their retention in a chromatographic process. We discuss how selected parameters affect the behavior of Janus dumbbells near the polymer layers. We show that the structure of the surface layer mainly depends on the position of the active groups in the chains and the assumed particle-chain interactions. The particles penetrate the polymer layer and accumulate close to the active groups.
