Polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers (PVA) and novel polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers incorporated with cobalt metal organic framework (PVA/Co-MOF) sorbents were produced via electrospinning. The produced nanofibers were confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). SEM images showed consistent and beads free nanofibers were synthesized. FTIR spectra's exhibited shifts in critical functional groups positions thus it confirmed that there was a given amount of cobalt metal organic frameworks implanted in the incorporated nanofibers. TGA plots also confirmed that PVA/MOF nanofibers exhibited higher decomposition temperatures than that of the pure polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers. Therefore, it affirmed the amalgamation between cobalt metal organic frameworks and polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers. The ability of PVA and novel PVA/Co-MOF nanofibers to remove Pb 2+ ions from solution was investigated. The sorption Pb 2+ ions on incorporated nanofibers (novel PVA/Co-MO) were two-fold as compared to the pure polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers. The thermodynamic parameters: Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) and apparent enthalpy (ΔH°) showed that the adsorption Pb 2+ ions onto the electro-spun nanofibers were spontaneous and exothermic.

Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers ( PAN-nfs) are one of t he most studied nanofibres because of their excellent characteristics, such as good mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and good thermal stability. Due to the easy dissolution in polar organic solvents, PAN-nfs are mostly produced via electrospinning technique. The electrospun PAN-nfs surfaces are relatively in-active and hydrophobic, and, therefore, hinder some potential applications; however, chemical surface modification reactions, such as amination, reduction, hydrolysis, and amidoximation, have been carried out on them. These reactions bring about functional groups, such as amine, hydroxyl, carboxylic, imine etc, to the surface PAN-nfs and invariably make their surfaces active and hydrophilic. The surface-modified PAN-nfs have been used as supports for organic compounds, enzymes, and antibodies in biological studies. They have also been used for immobilization of various organic ligands for adsorption of metal ions in water. Furthermore, because of their ability to complex metal ions, several surface-modified PAN-nfs have also been used as supports for transition metal catalysts in Fenton's chemistry.

Synthesis of Pyrazole‐Based Pyridine Ligands and Their Use as Extractants for Nickel(II) and Copper(II): Crystal Structure of a Copper(II)–Ligand Complex

Three pyrazole-based pyridine ligands, 2-(3-butyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (1), 2-[3-(tert-butyl)-1H-pyrazol-5-yl]pyridine (2) and 2-(3-octyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (3) were synthesised and fully characterised using conventional means. We then carried out a comprehensive solvent-extraction study of Ni II and Cu II in the presence and absence of a synergist (sodium p-dodecylbenzenesulfonate). The solvent extraction of only Ni II in the presence of a synergist produced extraction values between 72 and 73 %. The competitive extraction of Ni II and Cu II from a base-metal ion mix (Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ ) produced extraction values of 85-90 % extraction of Cu II for two ligands without synergists and values for Cu II and Ni II [a] Based on the above, we set out firstly to synthesise the three pyrazole-based pyridine ligands (see Scheme 1 for ligand struc-
