Adsorption of Methyl Orange on Corncob Activated Carbon: Kinetic, Equilibrium, and Thermodynamic Studies

Abstract: H3PO4 activated corncob carbon was used for removal of methyl orange. Characterization of the prepared carbon showed that it has many pores with a specific surface area equal to 714 m2 g-1. During this study, the concentration of methyl orange was monitored using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. The kinetic study of the adsorption of methyl orange on activated carbon was performed and the adsorption rate was found to be consistent with pseudo-second order kinetics with 240 min as the equilibrium time. The equil… Show more

“…The removal of MO favors the acidic nature rather than the basic solutions. The study conducted by Abollé et al (2022) recorded that the removal of MO dyes increased from 52.09% to 99.75% as the pH value decreased from 11.61 to 2.04. The two will repel each other because MO is an anionic dye, and the AC surface has negative charges.…”

“…After that, it slowly reached equilibrium within 2 h after most of the vacant sites were filled. Moreover, pH value plays an essential role in adsorption (Tao et al 2019;Abollé et al 2022). The removal of MO favors the acidic nature rather than the basic solutions.…”

“…We also note that the experimental maximum quantities of dye adsorbed per mass of clay at equilibrium are closer to the theoretical maximum values for the quantity of dye adsorbed with pseudo-2-order kinetics than with pseudo-1-order kinetics. This implies that the dye adsorption process on our clay is governed by a bimolecular process involving a collision between a clay active site and a dye molecule [18].…”

“…Various dyes were removed by adsorption on activated carbon including methylene blue [9], methyl orange [10], Rhodamine B [11] and indigo carmine [12]. The control of the kinetics of adsorption and the thermodynamic parameters are necessary for the control of the phenomenon of adsorption of an adsorbent on an adsorbate in order to optimize the study and to think of the use of the process on a large scale.…”
