“…The adsorption method has attracted the most interest to supply clean water in ancient cultures and is still commonly used in today's world because of its design and operation flexibility, low cost, simple and convenient to operate while still giving an excellent treatment efficiency [24]. Adsorption in general is a separation process that involves the removal of a substance (pollutants) from one phase (liquid or gas) followed by its accumulation at the other surface (adsorbent).…”

“…In addition to the environmental friendliness of SA, the carboxyl groups on its molecular chain can serve as an active site for adsorbing metal ions, and the reactive -OH group on its molecular chain can also be easily modified by grafting reaction to obtain hydrogel materials with more functional groups ( Wang and Wang, 2010 ). Due to the superior performance and eco-friendly advantages of SA, it has been widely used to prepare various polymer packing films ( Saravanakumar et al, 2020 ; Zhang et al, 2020 ), drug-delivery vehicles ( Mishra et al, 2021 ), antibacterial materials ( Dwivedi et al, 2020 ), carrier of catalyst ( Khan et al, 2020 ), superabsorbent hydrogel ( Kassem et al, 2020 ), coatings ( Fang et al, 2021 ) and adsorbent ( Wang et al, 2013a ; Gao et al, 2020 ). These materials derived from SA not only show excellent performance, but also exhibit unique eco-friendly advantages.…”

“…In recent years, biological modification methods have become a research hotspot. The researchers have used natural sources, including sodium alginate [9], chitosan [10], and lignin [11,12], as raw materials, which were prepared into adsorption materials for removing heavy metal ions in sludge. They are widely used because of their environmental friendliness, non-toxicity, and low cost.…”
