Adsorption of benzene, cyclohexane and hexane on ordered mesoporous carbon

Abstract: Ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) with high specific surface area and large pore volume was synthesized and tested for use as an adsorbent for volatile organic compound (VOC) disposal. Benzene, cyclohexane and hexane were selected as typical adsorbates due to their different molecular sizes and extensive utilization in industrial processes. In spite of their structural differences, high adsorption amounts were achieved for all three adsorbates, as the pore size of OMC is large enough for the access of these VOCs… Show more

“…Four criteria for fillers are needed in order to provide good growing conditions for microbes and large-scale application23: (1) great surface area; (2) surface hydrophilicity; (3) stable chemical properties; (4) low cost. Thus, coal columnar activated carbon (CCAC), bamboo wood (BW), and biological ceramsite (BC) have been widely applied as fillers of biofilter24.…”

“…Among the methods of recovery, adsorption is considered one of the most favorable methods due to its low cost and high efficiency, for which, carbonaceous materials have been widely used due to their versatility, selectivity, surface area, variety of porous structure, high capacity and rapid adsorption kinetics [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Characterizing activated carbons with the ability to adsorb VOCs allows knowing the interaction between these adsorbents and the adsorbent material [10].…”

“…Therefore, the enthalpy of immersion of five activated carbons with different textural and chemical properties in hexane and cyclohexane is determined in this work. Furthermore, the relationship between the immersion enthalpy with the micropore volume, the content of basic groups (that favor the solid-solvent interaction), the surface area and the E o W o product that is calculated from Equation (3) [10]. The change of the enthalpy in the solid-liquid interaction is calculated taking into account the structure of the solvents, and it is even more interesting because those are C 6 hydrocarbon compounds but they differ in their size and the arrangement of the molecules and this affects the affinity with the solid, the interaction, the entrance to the pores and hence, the adsorption process.…”

“…Air pollution (atmosphere) due to human activities has led to the fact that over the past 200 years, the concentration of carbon dioxide has increased by almost 30%. Nevertheless, humanity continues to burn fossil fuels and destroying forests [4,5]. The process is too colossal, that leads to global environmental problems.…”

“…In particular, the global consumption of carbon materials is about 1.1 million tons per year and continues to grow at 9% per year [11]. Thus a major amount of activated carbon (80-85%) is produced from non-renewable resources.…”
