The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential of natural clay obtained (from Fez city, Morocco) as an adsorbent for the removal of basic dyes (Astrazon Blue BG and Astrazon Yellow 7GLL) from liquid effluents. Natural clay was characterised using different physical-chemical methods, including nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), pH of the point of zero charge (pHPZC) and Boehm titration method. The clay was tested to remove various textile dyes from the aqueous solution at room temperature. Parameters such as initial dye concentration, solution pH, adsorbent dosages and contact time were performed in a batch system for controlling the operating conditions. Experimental results data indicated that the adsorption process is a fast and spontaneous reaction. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model provides the best fit to the experimental data of BG and YL adsorption onto the natural clay. Theadsorption isotherm data of both the dyes onto the natural clay were fitted well to the Langmuir model. A maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 101 mg.g-1 for BG and 127 mg.g-1 for YL are obtained at 298.15 K.The results suggest that the natural clay could be used as an inexpensive adsorbent for the removal of the textile dyes from aqueous solutions.

As part of the effort to extract more value from agri-food waste, innovative adsorbents have been prepared from faba bean waste (FB: Vicia Faba L) using a physical activation process at a moderate temperature of 350°C. This process, developed by the authors of the study, yields effective adsorbent materials known as HTFB. Due to the favorable physico-chemical properties of these materials, they are suitable for treating water that is contaminated with two different groups of dyes: anionic (orange G (OG)) and cationic dyes (crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB)). The adsorption was carried out in batch mode to examine the influence of different operating conditions (pH, initial dye concentration, temperature, contact time, etc.) on the percentage of the removal dye. According to the experiment results, the materials developed have demonstrated a remarkable efficiency for the elimination of cationic dyes (66.86% for the crystal violet and 58.20% of the methylene blue) and a limited efficiency for anionic dyes (7.05% of the orange G) at natural pH. Kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second-order model better described the adsorption of dyes onto the HTFB. Besides, Langmuir isotherm model fit better the equilibrium data of dyes adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities determined from the Langmuir equation were 43.48, 32.68, and 3.51 mg/g, for CV, MB and OG, respectively.

Finding an economical, efficient and easy handling alternative for commercial grade activated charcoal (AC) in textile wastewater treatment is a dire need. To address this, a noxious weed water hyacinth (WH) has been explored as a 'biosorbent' for the decolorization of the hazardous textile dye, Remazol Brilliant Red 3BS (RBR 3BS) in wastewater. A novel surface modification has been carried out using the quaternary ammonium salt, N-Cetyl-N,N,N-trimethyl ammonium bromide, to enhance the dye decolorization capacity of raw WH. The impact of several process parameters, viz. pH, dosage of adsorbent, temperature, concentration and contact time have been examined. Batch adsorption studies, kinetic-thermodynamics, isothermal modelling and error analysis have been studied to ascertain the efficacy of the adsorbent. A comparison of the results has been carried out with activated carbon (AC). Surface-modified WH showed the highest dye uptake of 104.26 mg g-1 , at 27°C, which was about 10 times more than that of AC. Isothermal, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were conducted for identification of adsorption type taking place for dye-adsorbent systems. Energy of activation was 8.65 kJ mol-1 for treated WH and 8.98 kJ mol-1 for AC. It was proven that surface-modified WH had a high capability to replace AC for adsorption treatments.
