The biosorption process using natural materials has found widespread applications than to their inexpensiveness, availability, and reusability. The aim of this research is to investigate the efficiency of psyllium seed powder in removal of reactive orange 16 dye. The impacts of various influential parameters such as initial pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, temperature and dye concentration were evaluated using a batch biosorption method. Data analysis was conducted by SPSS 19. The removal efficiency of reactive dye 16 using the natural adsorbent psyllium was obtained to be 94% in optimal conditions (pH 4, contact time = 40 min, and adsorbent dose = 2 g/L). Biosorption equilibrium experiments indicated that the best fit was achieved with Langmuir isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 206.6 mg/g at 303 K. Kinetic analysis revealed that adsorption experimental data were best fitted by pseudo-second-order model. Free energy of adsorption (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) changes were calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. Thermodynamic evaluation indicates that a spontaneous process has occurred. Inexpensive, locally available, and effective materials could be used for dye removal in wastewater treatment processes. Undoubtedly low-cost adsorbent benefits for commercial purposes in the future.

Non-covalent, dye-mediated interactions between organo-montmorillonites (''organo-clays'') and a chitosan-based polyelectrolyte are exploited for highly effective and fast removal of different, industrially-important anionic dyes (singleazo, double-azo, anthraquinone) from aqueous solutions. The addition of only 10 wt% of polyelectrolyte to a conventional organo-clay results in a 100% increase in absolute dye uptake capacity, an acceleration of dye uptake kinetics by up to 500%, and the flocculation of large, easily-separable sorbent aggregates. These substantial improvements in adsorption performance are driven by the mediating effect of the anionic dyes (acting as electrostatic mediator between the positively-charged polyelectrolyte chains and organo-clays), enabling the formation of true hybrid sorbent structures without the need for covalent crosslinking chemistry. The dye-mediated sorption and hybrid formation mechanism is further evidenced by structural and chemical characterization of the hybrid sorbents (small angle XRD, IR mapping) as well as by analysis of dye sorption kinetics according to the intraparticle diffusion model. Importantly, the organo-clay/polyelectrolyte hybrid system provides a highly interesting adsorbent for the treatment of dye mixtures. Our study shows that structurally different anionic dyes localise at different sites within the hybrid structure (organo-clay intergallery spaces vs polyelectrolyte/organo-clay interface), enabling the simultaneous adsorption of different dyes with high efficiency. Consequently, the total uptake capacity for dye mixtures was 50% larger than that of individual dyes, demonstrating the enormous potential of the hybrids for industrial wastewater purification, where dye mixtures are ubiquitous.

Background and AimWater resources pollution control is one of the main challenges of our time for researchers. Colored wastewater discharges caused by textile industry activities has added to the concern. In this study, removal of Acid Orange 7 dye (AO7) using Kenya Tea residue absorbent (granular) has been studied.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016. In this work, initially, tea residue was prepared in three forms of raw, treated with concentrated phosphoric acid, and carbonated, at temperatures of 350, 450 and 500 °C in the chemistry laboratory of Gonabad University of Medical Sciences. Then, efficiency of the above absorbents in the removal of Acid Orange 7 dye in initial concentrations of dye as 50–500 mg/l from water samples in terms of pH 2–10 and 1–10 g/l of adsorbent dose within 20 to 300 minutes was investigated. In addition, their subordination from Langmuir and Freundlich absorption isotherms was also determined. Concentration changes in Acid Orange 7 dye at a wavelength of 483 nm was determined by spectrophotometry and results were reported using descriptive statistics.ResultsResults showed that efficiency of Acid Orange 7 dye removal is higher in acidic pH and higher adsorbent dosage. The highest efficiency of Acid Orange 7 dye removal was 98.41% by raw tea residue absorbent at pH 2, reaction time was 120 minutes and initial concentration of dye was 50 mg/l, which was obtained at adsorbent dosage of 10 g/l. It was determined that the mechanism of absorption acceptably follows Freundlich absorption isotherm (R2=0.97).ConclusionDue to the availability and very low price, optimal performance of Kenya tea raw residue (granular) in Acid Orange 7 dye removal, it can be used as an efficient surface absorber in an absorber from colored wastewater.
