Palm oil empty fruit bunches (POEFBs) can be converted into levulinic acid (LA) and furfural, which are among the top building-block chemicals. The purpose of this study was to investigate separate and simultaneous kinetic model parameters for LA and furfural production from POEFBs, which were pretreated by soaking in aqueous ammonia (SAA). The highest LA yield, which was obtained at a reaction temperature of 170°C after 90 min in an acidic solution with a concentration of 1 M, was 52.1 mol%. The highest furfural yield was 27.94 mol%, which was obtained at a reaction temperature of 170°C after 20 min in an acidic solution with a concentration of 0.5 M. SAA pretreatment affected activation energy in glucose degradation reactions and favoured direct conversion of hemicellulose to furfural. The activation energy of LA production (EakHMF) increases with higher acid catalyst concentration, and the activation energy of furfural production (EakXYN) decreases with higher acid concentration. These trends in the activation energy occurred in both separate and simultaneous kinetic models. Simultaneous kinetic model is better to calculate kinetic parameters of LA and furfural production than separate kinetic models because the simultaneous kinetic model had a lower sum of square error (SSE) when estimating kinetic parameters.

A self-synthesized HQ-8 resin was prepared using a O/W suspension polymerization technique and employed as a potential adsorbent for the removal of acid soluble lignin (ASL) from rice straw hydrolysate (RSH). The structure and morphology of the HQ-8 resin before and after the adsorption of ASL were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. A series of adsorption conditions such as pH value, adsorbent dose, initial concentration, and temperature were systematically investigated to obtain the optimum process parameters. Within the studied range of ASL concentrations, the adsorption equilibrium was found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well, with R 2 > 0.988. The rate of ASL adsorption onto the HQ-8 resin was very quick, and equilibrium was reached within 50 min of contact.Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of ASL on the HQ-8 resin was 64.61 mg g À1 at 298 K at an initial solution pH of 1. The regression results revealed that the ASL adsorption kinetics was represented accurately by a pseudo-second-order model. The efficiency of the HQ-8 resin for the spontaneous and exothermic adsorption of ASL is attributed to the hydrophobic interaction between the cross-linked benzene ring of the HQ-8 resin and the aromatic ring of ASL. In addition, the activation energy of ASL adsorption onto the HQ-8 resin was 35.99 kJ mol À1 . In summary, the present adsorption studies of ASL from RSH revealed the potential of a self-synthesized HQ-8 resin to be applied as an alternative adsorbent for lignocellulose hydrolysate detoxification.

AbstractsThe aim of this study was to develop an environmental-benign bio-measure that could be used to purify dye-contaminated wastewater. Herein, a hybrid adsorption-periphyton reactor (HAPR), combining a bioadsorbent based adsorption unit and a periphyton-based photo-bioreactor (PPBR), was built and applied for the first time. Firstly, an efficient bioadsorbent, i.e, microwave-activated swede rape hull (MSRH), was produced, characterized and applied in an adsorption column, to pretreat methylene blue (MB) wastewater with high concentration (~100 mg L−1 or higher). Thereafter, the effluent of adsorption column, with lower dye concentration (~0.5 mg L−1), was collected and further purified by PPBR. Results showed that dye removal efficiency by HAPR was 99.95% (from 200 mg L−1 to 0.1 mg L−1 or lower). Decolorization mechanisms by PPBR, included adsorption process by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the surface of periphyton and degradation process. The study showed that HAPR was a novel, environmental friendly, efficient and promising dye-purification method and deserved further attention in future investigation.
