Adsorption and Desorption of Amoxicillin Antibiotic from Water Matrices Using an Effective and Recyclable MIL-53(Al) Metal–Organic Framework Adsorbent

Abstract: Antibiotic contaminants in water and wastewater can cause serious damage to the environment and human health. Hence, their effective removal from water matrices is crucial. Effective removal of antibiotics using the adsorption process is a promising technique thanks to its easy regeneration, low cost, and high efficiency. In this work, the adsorption of amoxicillin (AMX) was investigated on a synthesized flexible metal−organic framework MIL-53(Al). The MIL-53(Al) adsorbent with a high surface area was synthesi… Show more

“…19.60 mg g −1 ), which may be owing to the lack of strong π–π stacking interactions between Mg-MOFs and tetrachloromethane. In brief, it can be highlighted that the adsorption process was characteristic of chemical adsorption, suggesting the as-synthesized Mg-MOF is a promising candidate for VOC adsorption in the wood-drying industry [ 58 ].…”

“…S11, † the stretching vibration peak of carboxyl groups exhibited a red shift of 22 cm −1 with the skeleton stretching vibration of the aromatic ring ranging from 1558-1265 cm −1 to 1416-1208 cm −1 in CuCP@MB. 55 Moreover, the C-S-C skeleton stretching vibrations of MB were found at 691 and 600 cm −1 with a significant blue shift of 56 and 49 cm −1 compared to those of free MB, respectively. 56 Meanwhile, the appearance of the vibration peak at 1612 cm −1 in CuCP@MB could be attributed to the skeleton vibration of the nitrogen heterocycle in the host-guest system.…”

“…Due to such limitations, the race for new methods to remove antibiotics has begun to find ideal adsorptive materials with high surface areas. A versatile platform for the removal of antibiotics is particularly desirable. A new class of porous materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) composed of metal nodes and organic linkers, can be an ideal material platform because virtually limitless combination of metal nodes and organic linkers has facilitated the production of more than 80,000 MOF entries. Since the ultimate purpose is to eliminate antibiotics remaining in water through MOFs, it is very essential and should not be overlooked to consider stable MOFs that do not collapse in the water and chemical environments. Zr-based MOFs are particularly attractive due to the presence of high-valent transition metals and carboxylate ligands, presenting good water stability.…”
