Adrenocorticotrophic hormone during the first day of life

Abstract: The plasma concentration of ACTH (by radioimmunoassay) was measured in 56 healthy parturients and their newborns. Umbilical cord and maternal venous blood were collected immediately after delivery. In addition one venous blood sample was taken from 50 newborns at the age of 15, 30, 60 min, 2, 6, 12, or 24 h. The maternal and cord plasma ACTH levels were higher than the levels in healthy nonpregnant women. There are no differences between the mean maternal (226 +/- 146 pg/ml) and cord (226 +/- 147 pg/ml) values… Show more

“…of the ACTH concentrations after logarithmic transformation of the results, which results in lower mean concentrations. However, the declining pattern of ACTH levels after birth is similar to previous observations (14,15). The T levels measured in the cord blood and neonatal circulation agree well with previous results (10,11).…”

“…In the literature there are several reports of elevated ACTH values in human cord plasma (12, 13, 14). The ACTH values show a decreasing course during the first six postnatal hours (14). Thus high AVP values and moderately elevated ACTH levels seem to be a consequence of normal labour.…”

“…Rees et al ( I ) studied the reliability criteria and found close similarity to bioactivity . The method has been used by several groups ( 14, IS, 16,17,18,19). To obtain the necessary sensitivity and improve specificity most techniques include a preliminary extraction with Amberlite, Fuller's earth, silicic acid or, as used in the present work, adsorbent glass particles ( 2 ) .…”
