Adoption of open source software in software-intensive organizations – A systematic literature review

Abstract: Context: Open source software (OSS) is changing the way organizations develop, acquire, use, and commercialize software. Objective: This paper seeks to identify how organizations adopt OSS, classify the literature according to these ways of adopting OSS, and with a focus on software development evaluate the research on adoption of OSS in organizations. Method: Based on the systematic literature review method we reviewed publications from 24 journals and seven conference and workshop proceedings, published betw… Show more

“…The rapid growth in scale and complexity of software systems, together with the availability of third party software components, such as Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) or Open Source Software (OSS) components, increase the adoption of component-based software development (CBSD) in software industry [1]. This adoption demands specialized software development processes that aim at supporting Off-The-Shelf (OTS, including both COTS and OSS) component acquisition, especially Requirements Engineering (RE) processes.…”

“…Even though there is a considerable body of research on the challenges of integrating OSS components in the development of software products [2], [4], the majority of these works refer to success stories derived from single case studies or experience reports that provide very limited information about the real industrial landscape of companies integrating OSS components. Moreover, the role that OSS communities play on supporting integrators to solve their integration problems has not been further explored.…”

“…Open Source Software (OOS) wide spread adoption, including in the industry, has raised increased concerns related with software quality and certification [3]. In this context, the CROSS research project 4 aims at developing software analysis techniques that can be combined to assess open source software projects.…”
