Adoption of multiple electronic marketplaces: Antecedents from a grounded theory study

Abstract: T o achieve economies of scope, most motor carriers combine long-term contracts with shippers and brokers with periodic spot assignments found on electronic marketplaces (EMs). While previous research has addressed how carriers adopt an EM, we know little about factors that influence carriers to adopt multiple EMs. Given the rise of the platform economy of the trucking industry, we chose to address this gap and generate mid-range theory on adopting multiple EMs in a logistics context. “…In addition, the UTAUT model failed to account for how to effectively deal with employee's emotions and how it affects employee's adoption and acceptance of new practices (Venkatesh, 2000), which may be especially harmed when those practices may affect job or status loss. Although the UTAUT model has its limitations, a variety of Operations Management studies on Industry 4.0 have used it as a fundamental, ranging from understanding employees' blockchain technology adoption (Pieters et al, 2022;Queiroz et al, 2021) to the adoption of electronic marketplaces (Collignon and Sternberg, 2020) and the use of big data (Aloysius et al, 2018). This study, therefore, explores how managers can effectively facilitate employees' acceptance of Industry 4.0 technology adoption using the UTAUT model as a springboard for a further model extension.…”

“…Logistics and supply chain management research on business phenomena reflects this as well. Most recently, the Journal of Business Logistics (JBL) has published papers about electronic marketplace adoption by transportation providers (Collignon and Sternberg, 2020), visibility through RFID (Rao et al 2019), and the impact of technology on both sustainability (Sanders et al, 2019) and the future of LSCM talent (Wehrle et al 2020). An interesting question to ponder is, what will the reality of everyday life look like a decade from now because of nascent (or yet to be realized) technology that further advances LSCM capabilities?…”
