The demand for efficient knowledge management (KM) in healthcare is increasing because the complexity and scale of the knowledge generated from medical research and clinical practices have resulted in challenges of information overload and medical quality. These critical issues can be improved through the adoption of knowledge management systems (KMS).However, the adoption of technological innovations in healthcare demands an enhanced understanding of the lagged technology adoption status in the healthcare sector. This study uses empirical methods to investigate the determinants of KMS adoption on the basis of a national survey. Results suggest that KMS adoption is affected by organizational characteristics, KM enablers, and KMS characteristics. We emphasize that KMS adoption in healthcare is considerably complex because it largely depends on KM enablers and organizational characteristics, and not solely on system characteristics. The implications of the findings for research and practice are outlined in this work.

As healthcare systems demand that nurses be competent in using electronic medical records for patient care, the integration of electronic medical records into nursing curricula has become necessary. The purpose of this study was to explore how students, new nurses, clinical instructors, and faculty perceive the integration of academic electronic medical records into the undergraduate clinical practicum. From January to February 2014, four focus group interviews with 18 participants were conducted based on purposive sampling. Content analysis was used on the unabridged transcripts to extract themes and develop meaningful categories. Three major themes and eight subthemes were revealed from the focus group interviews. The major themes were "electronic medical record as a learning tool for clinical practicum," "essential functions of academic electronic medical records," and "expected outcomes of academic electronic medical record." Participants expected academic electronic medical records to enhance students' nursing informatics competencies. The findings of this study can inform the process of developing academic electronic medical records for clinical practicum, which will then augment students' informatics competencies.

This study undertook a literature survey to provide a taxonomy that represents research areas of Electronic Medical Record (EMR). We identified the following areas of research and classified them into eight main categories: design and implementation, evaluation, adoption, impacts, medical research, integration, EMR data design and management, and policy and standards. Even though EMR improves care quality and efficiency in a positive way, some negative perceptions by the health user community (health professionals and health service managers) should not be neglected. By categorizing EMR research articles, we reveal a clear set of grand challenges of EMR in the future education and research in health informatics, biomedical engineering, and related areas. A big picture of EMR research areas presented in this study helps health community to find scientific methods for various grand challenges in EMR.
