Adoption of Blockchain Technology for Enhanced Traceability of Livestock-Based Products

Abstract: Blockchain has become a modern technology that can enhance the traceability of products and services, which is particularly relevant to agri-food supply chains. This paper reviews studies on blockchain technology applications to the agri-food supply chain system and food industry, and discusses potential adaptation of blockchain technology for livestock-based products with a focus on the ASEAN Region and Thailand. A comprehensive method for reviewing the literature was adopted, and this paper encompasses stake… Show more

“…Blockchain has become an important technology in many applications of the PA discipline [ 135 ]. In livestock systems, blockchain is being used to enhance the traceability of livestock products, supply chain monitoring and tracking, as well as data security and assurance [ 136 , 137 , 138 ]. For example, AppliFarm is a leading blockchain platform that can track livestock data in the animal production sector.…”

“…Jabbar et al [17] adopted GS1 standard barcodes with a serialized unique product identity, lot production number, and expiry date. The end consumer can utilize the QR code and/or RFID tag to enable them to read all the immutable traceability information [18,19]. Other technologies have been developed to improve the traceability system [19], such as near-field communication (NFC), wireless sensor networks (WSN), cloud computing technology (CCT), and DNA barcoding.…”

Other technologies have been developed to improve the traceability system [19], such as near-field communication (NFC), wireless sensor networks (WSN), cloud computing technology (CCT), and DNA barcoding. However, the typical traceability system does not sufficiently control the information's openness, making it susceptible to manipulation.…”

“…Conversely, traceability technology can assist in determining the amount of carbon tax a company incurs. Given that consumers may opt for high-priced, low-carbon footprint products when faced with such information and market pressure, companies are compelled to reassess and restructure their supply chains to minimize carbon emissions and meet consumer demands [12]. Mazzu et al [13] discovered that product packaging containing information verified by blockchain influences consumers' perceptions of health and preferences.…”
