The adoption of innovative technology has always been a complex issue. The agriculture sectors of developing countries are following unsustainable farming policies. The currently adopted intensive farming practices need to replace with conservative agriculture practices (CAPs). However, the adoption of CAPs has remained low since its emergence and reports have suggested that the use of CAPs is scant for sustainable farm performance. This article aims to study three scenarios: Firstly, the influence of personal and CAPs level factors on the intention to adopt CAPs; secondly, the influence intention to adopt CAPs, facilitating conditions and voluntariness of use on the actual use of CAPs; and thirdly, the impact of the actual use of CAPs on sustainable farm performance. This study is based on survey data collected by structured interviews of rice farmers in rural Pakistan, which consists of 336 samples. The final analysis is performed using two methods: (1) a well-established and conventional way of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using Smart PLS 3.0, and (2) a frontier technology of computing using an artificial neural network (ANN), which is generated through a deep learning algorithm to achieve maximum possible accuracy. The results reveal that profit orientation and environment attitude as behavioural inclination significantly predicts the intention to adopt CAPs. The perception of effort expectancy can significantly predict the intention to adopt CAPs. Low intention to adopt CAPs caused by the low-level trust on extension, low-performance expectancy, and low social influence for the CAPs. The adoption of CAPs is affected by facilitating conditions, voluntary use of CAPs, and the intention to adopt CAPs. Lastly, the use of CAPs can positively and significantly forecast the perception of sustainable farm performance. Thus, it is concluded that right policies are required to enhance the farmers’ trust on extension and promote social and performance expectation for CAPs. Besides, policy recommendations can be made for sustainable agriculture development in developing and developed countries.

Influencing Factors on the Ecological Protection Behaviors of Entrepreneurial Farmers in Chinese Forest Zones

Abstract:Following the collective forest tenure reforms in China, many households pursued entrepreneurial activities creating substantial pressure on the environment. This study examines data collected from 462 informants in 10 provinces in Southern China to understand how changes in attitudes toward ecological protection behavior occur. The internal mechanisms of ecological attitudes were explored using structural equation modeling to obtain a function path. Ecological emotion has a direct effect on ecological protection behavior by acting as an intermediary between ecological knowledge and ecological protection. Perceived ecological severity mediates between ecological knowledge and emotion influencing entrepreneurial farmers' ecological protection behavior. The perception of individual effect is mediated by perceptions of ecological severity and ecological emotion, eventually affecting ecological protection behavior. A model of cognition-emotion-practice is proposed based on the findings.

Environmental pollution as a result of the improper disposal of pesticide packaging wastes (PPWs) has posed serious harm to groundwater, soil and public health. However, few studies focused on PPWs green disposal willingness and behaviors of farmers from the perspective of perceived value. Based on the first-hand data, collected from 635 farmers of grain-producing counties in Henan province of China, through the questionnaire survey method, this paper adopted a structural equation model (SEM) to empirically explore the formation mechanism of perceived value on PPWs green disposal, and green disposal willingness and behaviors were further in-depth investigated. The results showed that the action of farmers’ green disposal of PPWs followed the causal relationship, whereby perceived value→behavioral willingness→behavioral performance, and farmers’ perceived value came from the comprehensive tradeoff and comparison between perceived benefits and perceived risks. Meanwhile, the perceived benefits and perceived risks could have significant effects on green disposal willingness and behaviors directly and indirectly, among which perceived benefits (0.478) had the greatest positive total effects on the willingness, and perceived risks (−0.362) had the greatest negative total effects on the behaviors. Interestingly, there existed inconsistence between farmers’ green disposal willingness and behaviors. When faced with the choice of PPWs green disposal, the farmers were generally risk averse, which resulted in them being more inclined to take conservative behaviors driven by the profit maximization, and even showed the “powerless” state with willingness but no actual action.
