Adolescents’ Daily Perception of Internalizing Emotional States by Means of Smartphone-based Ecological Momentary Assessment

Abstract: This study uses ecological momentary assessment (EMA) with smartphone devices to examine community adolescents' perceptions regarding both the intensity of and variability in their daily sadness/depression, anxiety, and somatic problems over the period of one week. Participants were 90 high-school students (M age = 14.61, SD = 1.64; range 12-18). “…Several proof-of-concept studies have highlighted activity changes captured by smartphone sensors, and the usage patterns are associated with depressive symptoms in adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) [4,5]. Higher degrees of depression are linked to reduced contact with one's social network, shorter text messages, reduced duration of calls, and less variability in geospatial activity [6][7][8][9].…”

“…18 EMA allows for the collection of data in real time, and hence it is able to capture behavior changes over time and avoid recall bias. Data that may be obtained through smartphone EMA include self-report of mood as well as daily life behavioral markers, with a focus on immediate, small-scale emotional fluctuations and how they link to behavioral outcomes such as food binges and marijuana, nicotine, and alcohol use, [19][20][21] and even self-harm in borderline personality disorder. EMA differs from standard psychiatric assessment and treatment as symptoms of mental health disorders are typically monitored through clinicianadministered and self-reported rating scales at the time of a visit.…”
