Adolescents’ attitudes to the COVID-19 vaccination

Abstract: Vaccines against COVID-19 are now available for adolescents in Hong Kong but vaccine hesitancy is a major barrier to herd immunity. This survey study explores Hong Kong adolescents’ attitudes towards the COVID-19 vaccination. 2609 adolescents from across Hong Kong completed an online survey focused on the intent to vaccinate and the reasons for their choice. 39% of adolescents intended to take the COVID-19 vaccination and significant factors for this decision include: having at least one parent vaccinated, kno… Show more

“…The primary reason was to protect their children and those around them. A study in Hong Kong [ 19 ] evaluating adolescent intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccination found the major reasons were that they were worried about infection, wanted to protect their family, and wanted to return to normality before COVID-19. Thus, we see a theme emerging that a major reason adolescents want, and their guardians want them, to receive the booster is to protect themselves and those around them.…”

“…Although there is a plethora of information regarding vaccine uptake and acceptance in adults, little is known about adolescent and parental hesitancy and underlying intentions for COVID-19 vaccines [ 17 , 18 ]. Of the studies that do exist, most examine vaccine acceptance rates and hesitancy, and were carried out before vaccines were authorized for use in adolescents [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Additionally, these studies focus on the primary series of vaccination, not booster doses.…”

“…Previous studies on the willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccination included adults [ 14 , 15 ] and university students [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. The few studies which investigated vaccine hesitancy in adolescents [ 19 , 20 , 21 ] mainly focused on the influence of parents on adolescents’ willingness to vaccinate, while studies among Chinese adolescents were mostly conducted in one city.…”

“…There are also non-scientific reasons that complicate the eradication of COVID-19 and they chiefly include vaccine hesitancy/resistance and the fact that approvals of vaccines for adolescents have lagged approvals for adults because of the increased safety requirements for adolescents that lengthen clinical trial timelines [8]. This issue is now of more importance than ever because the omicron variant appears to be particularly infectious in younger populations [9].…”
