The Southeast Asian countries have about 600 million tobacco smokers within the global burden of tobacco users. Most smokers begin at early stage of life and persist through adulthood. Malaysia alone has about 5 million smokers, 20% of whom are younger than 18 years old. Many factors are implicated in the continuous rising trend of tobacco use among adol… Show more

“…In developing countries, documented factors implicated in the initiation of tobacco use among youth include experimentation, peer pressure and sense of feeling more matured. 16 Students in late adolescence were more likely to consume tobacco compared with those in middle adolescence. Similar results were seen in a study from Kerala where students aged 16 years and above were nearly three times more likely to be tobacco users compared with those who were 13-year olds (adjusted OR=2.9, CI 1.6 to 5.3).…”

“…Furthermore, the independent variables in this analysis were only those available in the 2013 RISKESDAS dataset; these were designed to measure a wider range of health indicators, and not smoking alone. Thus, other possible key determinants of adolescent smoking such as parental disapproval, affordability/availability of cigarettes, the smoking behavior of peers and older brothers (for boys), and peers’ attitudes towards smoking (for boys) [19–21,32] could not be included in the analysis. Further, we did not analyse parent–child correlations in smoking (an unpublished report of RISKESDAS data has shown an association between smoking among those aged 10–19 years and smoking among their parents [33]).…”

“…There are 1.2 billion smokers globally, of which more than 50% are young people. There are nearly 600 million tobacco users within the Southeast Asian countries, with the region contributing to about 50% of the global burden of tobacco users [1]. It is estimated that tobacco-related deaths will be the most important cause of deaths in developing countries by 2020 [2].…”
