ÖzetAmaç: İntihar gençlerde ölüm nedenleri arasında ikinci sırada yer almaktadır. Bu araştırmanın amacı, intihar girişiminde bulunan çocuk ve ergenlerin ruhsal tanıları ile klinik ve demografik özelliklerinin saptanmasıdır. Gereç ve yöntem: Ocak 2009-Aralık 2011 tarihleri arasında intihar girişimi nedeniyle çocuk ve ergen ruh sağlığı ve hastalıkları hekimi tarafından değerlendirilmiş olan 18 yaş altındaki hastaların tıbbi kayıtları geriye dönük olarak incelendi. Bulgular: İntihar girişiminde bulunan 61 olgunun 45'i (%73.8) kız ve 48'i (%78.7) 15-17 yaş aralığındaydı. Aşırı doz ilaç alımı en yaygın intihar girişimi yöntemiydi (%83.6). Girişimde bulunanların %65.6'sında ruhsal bozukluk saptandı. En sık belirlenen ruhsal bozukluklar majör depresif bozukluk, davranım bozukluğu ve dikkat eksikliği hiperaktivite bozukluğu idi. Aile ve kız/erkek arkadaşla çatışma intihar girişimi için en sık tetikleyici faktörlerdi. Sonuç: İntihar girişimleriyle ilgili risk faktörlerinin belirlenmesi, intihar davranışının öngörülebilmesine yardımcı olabilir. Araştırmamızın sonucunda, kız cinsiyette olma, başta depresyon olmak üzere ruhsal bozukluklar ve yakın ilişkilerde sorunlar ergenlerde intihar girişimi ile ilişkili önemli etkenler olarak belirlenmiştir. İntihar riski olan ergenlerin izlem ve tedavisi koruyucu ruh sağlığı açısından önem taşımaktadır. The aim of this study was to investigate psychiatric diagnoses, clinical and demographic characteristics of children and adolescents who attempted suicide. Materials and methods:Medical records of patients who attempted suicide under the age of 18 were examined by a child and adolescent psychiatrist, between January 2009 and December 2011 were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Out of 61 patients who attempted suicide, 45 (73.8%) were female and 48 (78.7%) of them were between the ages of 15-17. Drug overdose was the most common way of attempting suicide (83.6%). Psychopathology was diagnosed in 65.6% of these patients. The most frequent psychiatric disorders were major depressive disorder, conduct disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Conflicts with family and in boyfriend/ girlfriend relationships were the most common precipitant factors for attempting suicide. Conclusion: The identification of risk factors related to suicide attempts maybe helpful in predicting suicidal behaviour. Current research suggests that being female, having mental disorders (particularly depression) and close relationship problems were important factors associated with adolescent suicide attempts. Using a sample of 614 youths, this study examined differences and similarities between adolescents at risk (age range 11-20 years), and their integration in school or vocational training. We found that mood states (depression, anxiety), secure self (self-esteem and self-efficacy), relationship with parents, delinquency and substance use (alcohol, tobacco and cannabis) were variables which largely influenced social integration (school, work) for youths with poor sociodemographic backgrounds. An important variable we introduced here was sociodemographic background, which investigated the social situation of a youth. We distinguished two different groups (good vs. poor sociodemographic background). There were important differences between both groups. Youths with a poor sociodemographic background scored higher in suicidality and health complaints. The most striking differences were in substance use and delinquency. The structural equation model showed that poor mood was related to substance use at the start. Important paths were found in mood states over time, as for substance use, but interactions between both variables were small. We ran different models (poor vs. good social background, Swiss vs. migrant youths), and concluded that secure self and good family relations protected against poor mood and substance use and both variables indirectly influenced integration 2-3 years later.

Suicide remains the third leading cause of death among young people in the United States. Considering that youth who contemplate suicide generally exhibit warning signs before engaging in lethal self-harm, school-based mental health professionals can play a vital role in identifying students who are at risk for suicidal behavior. Nevertheless, the assessment of vulnerable children and adolescents is a challenging undertaking, with many variables considered relevant to the determination of a student's suicide risk level. This article introduces school-based mental health professionals to the Student Suicide Risk Assessment Protocol, an evaluation tool developed by the author to aid in the determination of student suicide potential, assist with the selection of appropriate interventions, and allow for documentation of school personnel's actions taken to mitigate a student's suicide risk.
